With the kind of reputation some breeds get nowdays, I feel like it can be dangerous for people to know what your dog is! My dogs have always chosen me, I never had the pleasure of picking what breed I wanted as I always rescue. As a result, I have owned several breeds that get a pretty bad rap (maybe I own one now...maybe I don't ) but I've always been afraid to tell people what they are in case, God forbid, somebody gets hurt. I don't feel like the dog would get as fair a chance as a safer breed. So, when the inevitable question comes, "what kind of dog is that?" I usually give some passable lie/distorted truthism...
Does anybody else do this, or am I a paranoid weirdo????

I dont blame you for not wanting people to know considering how some breeds are treated. For me I like to see peoples reaction when they see how well behaved "that breed" really can be. I had this with the dobermans I raised for guide dog work. They dont crop the ears so not everyone thought they were dobes. I got a lot of I cant believe how friendly your dog is I thought they were mean dogs. At which time I would educate them on how training and socialization is the key to owning breeds like that.

That's a good way of looking at it. I'm still nervous though... some people are just plain hateful about some dogs *sigh* oh well.

I know what you mean! like with pitbulls. you go to a shelter or some online website for dogs for sale, and the majority of dogs are pitbull/ pitbull mixes. Its really quite sad how just because some people didn't put the time and love into the training of their pit, others hate them. i think that in lots of people's minds, owning a pit was a status symbol. i have a pit, so i'm a tough person, etc. I personally would probably never own a pit, but just because i am a border collie person, not because of their reputation. people think that just because of that dog being a pitbull, he has got to be a dangerous dog. NOT TRUE!!!
