I have owned 5 dogs in my lifetime, all purchased as puppies from breeders.  Seeing Oprah's show a few years back on the horrors of puppy-mills, I started researching various rescue organizations when our Dalmatian was dying, to find a companion for our Yorkie.  Being partial to small dogs, I found an organization called SOSDogs - save our small dogs -and adopted a then 3 year old Westie (Coconut) who was rescued from a puppy-mill that was being shut down for deplorable conditions.  All she knew in her short life was having puppies with every heat, living in a wire cage outdoors in the harsh elements, never knowing kind human contact.  We were told these rescues need other similar size dogs in the house so they can learn how to be "dogs".  Reese, our Yorkie, taught Coconut (both now 5 years old) well and they have become inseparable.  Coconut quickly learned to handle steps, play with toys and trust and love humans, even my young grandsons.  She has become the best dog we have ever had and I have become a huge fan of adoption.  I would now always consider this option for any future pets.
