Hey All,

Well we are once again in the deciding corner. I don't know what I am going to do with that woman...never put two dog enthusiasts together and have them pick a breed. lol. (They'll never decide)

I'm wondering what it is like to own a Dachshund? Are they cuddle bugs? Are they barkers? Do they have clear nails or all of them black? What are the risks? I mean with their backs? Are they stubborn with Obedience training? I know they are stubborn with potty training. Thats about all I remember from looking them up previously.

We're looking at Smooth Mini's. (well she is...I'm the one who is leary she wants one so bad...and I am one not to say no...to her any way. But I want to know what I'm getting into if this is the breed we go with.)

Are they good dogs for obedience and Rally? Go to ground? I want a dog I can do something with besided show in Confirmation and this breed to me doesn't seem to applicable to much. But I don't know much about them so I am asking to learn more. I just know that EVERYONE has them and loves them and once you have one...well I hear they are like potato chips. Last year here at Stephens college there were about six of them. But I had very little interaction with them.

Please help!

no, shelties are like potato chips

I dont know much about doxies, there was one in my sons 4-h group, she was definitly a barker! She barked more than all my shelties She was also a little aggressive towards the other dogs. There was also a doxie chihuahua mix (chiweenie) that bit almost every trainer in the club plus went after all the big dogs. Of course this could just be due to lack of socialization/training not sure.

I do know they are prone to disc problems, I am sure that it all depends on the breeder you get the dog from you definitly dont want to one from lines that are prone to back problems.

they can do obedience, but the one we got in our club is kind of stubborn not sure about the advanced levels where they have to retrieve or jump over hurdles.  As for using them for earth dog comps, you would probably be better off not getting a dog from someone that does conformation only, but from someone that does earth dog trials. Like most other breeds ones that are used for conformation only are slowly losing their instincts to do the job they were origanly bred for.

I have a lovely dachshund in my neighborhood and she is cute and friendly. She doesn't seem to bark a lot. What the others are saying about it being aggressive, it was just that dog, not all of the dachshunds. I have met about 20 dachshunds and they were all great. Some do have lack of training and socialization but that is that, and it's only those few dachshunds. I've actually helped my friends train their dachshunds and they were great and weren't stubborn. Though with the potty training, it takes a while, just like when your deciding whether or not to get a dog and what breed. But i bet that once they get use to it, they will probably be all right with the potty training.

Animals are not to be treated rude but to be treated nice and respectedly. I love animals!!
