| My name is Vince and I'm just getting back into dog ownership since 1995 and I know allot has probably changed. I am the proud owner of my new daughter Sassy Lady an 9 week old Pit Bull pup. Back when I was last into dog ownership I always gave my dogs Science Diet. So now that I have gotten back into the game I am trying to get some info and opinions on what's the best brand dry dog food out now for dogs in general but mainly for American Pit Bull Terriers. Thanks for any info,

Tricky territory there. It's very debatable as to which commercial food is best, or even if commercial food should be the way to go at all! The best idea is to read up on all of the sides yourself and decide for yourself.
Copy and paste the below URLs.

Wonderful thread on Dogster with links to several raw diet sites:

There are several others as well. Google for 'em. Also, keep in mind that just because your vet says something about nutrition doesn't make it true. Vets in general are not taught very much about nutrition. Even if they were, it is my opinion that puting your full trust in a supposed authority can be foolish. I prefer to hear all the sides, then decide for myself.
My Papillon mix is fed a 100% prey model raw diet. My GSD would be too, if I could only afford that. For now, she's on a rotation diet of Solid Gold (dry food), Diamond Naturals (dry food), Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul (dry food), Blue Buffalo (canned, one a month), meaty table scraps, and a few raw meals a month.
I'm not sure how the quality was back in the '90s, but today--in my opinion--Science Diet is crappy. Pretty muchly a grain-based food, not much meat in it.
ETA:
Another diet option is the homecooked diet, which is cooked rather than raw. But I do not know much about that one in particular, so don't ask me.

Vince and Sassy (10/29/2009)
My name is Vince and I'm just getting back into dog ownership since 1995 and I know allot has probably changed. I am the proud owner of my new daughter Sassy Lady an 9 week old Pit Bull pup. Thanks for any info, Science Diet isn't a good food anymore, but I like Blue Buffalo, Orijen, and Taste of the Wild. I feed my dogs homemade dog food though, cause I still don't trust commercial dog food after all the recalls!
