Do dogs understand the concept of presents? Every day, when Happy approaches his girlfriend Callie’s house, he rustles through a pile of sticks. Like a fussy guy trying on slacks, he rejects one for being too long, one for being too scratchy, another for not being stylish.

Then he grabs the perfect stick and presents it to Callie. She takes it – and runs off without a word of thanks. Is Happy really giving her a gift? Can I write the whole thing off on my taxes? Does your dog give gifts? Let me know.

LOL! I have to reply to this one! Ricky my American Pit Bull Terrier gives me all sorts of gifts! From drooled socks, to chewed up pencils! He presents them to me by putting them in my lap, wagging his tail a mile a minute and smiling! LOL! He's the best!

I don't know if dogs understand the concept of gifts but I do know dogs understand the concept of what is theirs and ours. My dog loves playing, he has his basket full of toys. He's never chewed up anything he wasn't suppose to or destructed anything that wasn't his to play with. I can lay a blanket, pillow downstairs to lay on, jacket or anything that would resemble a toy feeling to grab but he never does. He always sniffs and leaves it alone, grabs his toys and plays with it. Maybe what your dogs are doing isn't more so "gifting" but sharing or playing?

YES, SHARING IS GOOD. BUT HAPPY REALLY PUTS THOUGHT INTO HIS GIFT GIVING. HE LOOKS AND LOOKS BEFORE HE PRESENTS CALLIE (OR SOME OTHER 'GIRL') WITH A PRESENT.

Whenever I come in the house, Cinnamon has to greet me with something in her mouth, be it a toy, sock, or whatever she's closest to when she realizes I'm at the door, I guess.
