I know somebody who is trying to find the right breed for them. They would like a medium-sized dog that doesn't shed very much but is able to go with them for jogs every morning. They would prefer one that doesn't bark too much. Getting along with children is a MUST for them. Do you  have any ideas?

My philosophy for finding the "right or perfect breed" is that you cannot find 'the' perfect dog but let the dog find you. Perhaps tell your friend to look around in shelters, explore the different breeds, and ask the people who work there if it "sheds" or if that dog has been reported to bite. Get some play time with the dog to see how it interacts with the children and go back for a few days, play dates with that dog and see if that is the one for you. Whenever we were looking for Star, I was only 5 years old. My mom wanted a dog didn't shed, bite and was well known as a good breed like a golden. We wanted of course to save a dog so went to shelters. After eight of them, Star found me. He wasn't the breed others suggested to my mom, but he was all the qualities we wanted. Since then he's been the best choice. So that is why I so strongly suggest going to adopt a dog.

miniature poodle comes to mind or maybe a schnauzer. little barking and getting along with children is something that that needs to be trained. All dogs bark, well except for the basenji they yodel!, if they are bored. I have 4 shelties, a breed that is considered to be high on the barking scale, but my dogs dont bark that much because they were trained from a young age that barking is unacceptable. Getting along with children requires training on the childs part. You can have the most kid freindly breed, but if the kids are mean to the dog, the dog is not going to like kids.

Manchester Terrier?  Very energetic, good runners, small/medium size, short coat.  Very playful.

American Pit Bull Terrier. Very loving, they are known as the "Nanny Dog" because they love kids SOOOO much, they are medium sized, don't shed much, and at least mine NEVER bark! They love jogging, but will lay down calmly if you prefer them to. Great all around dog!

Can you define Medium better?  Most of the suggestions here are what I consider smaller dogs.  I consider 16-20" medium.

Also see my responses to the other poster looking for breed suggestions.  There is a lot more to consider than medium sized, suitable for running, and good with kids.  (the kids part has a lot to do with the socialization and training of the dog and kids)

I'm thinking Bearded Collie, well bred Dalmatian, Pointer (large breed but very good apartment dogs), APBT or Am Staff, Eng. Springer Spaniel, Airedale, Standard Schnauzer, Boxer.

no dog is automatically good with kids,.
People assume because he is a retriever for instance, he has to be from birth good with kids, WRONG.
A dog needs to be socialized from puppy hood , regardless of breed, and kids should never be unsupervised with a puppy .
