I feel a bit like this smiley.  I adopted a stray 2 weeks ago that was dumped on my driveway. For me it was a mixed blessing, I just adopted a cat 2 weeks prior and our family was adjusting to Bart.  I have several Parrots, another cat and dog and newbies take time to adjust so, routines are out of the norm.  Phred, is our new adopted dog.  She came with several blessing; First Phred is a mutt-i-gree (lol-I like that) and her face looks just like our English Pointer that died a couple of years ago, her body is long with short legs--kinda matches our other dog Lil Bit'.  My big concern is Phred is going to have puppies. I've had children but no puppies.  I need some insight as to what happens, what do I need (blankets ect)  I did take her right away to the vet for shots and worming.  She goes for her second worming Wednesday.  All the doc told me is everything happens in 1 hour phases and if she is bearing down longer than an hour call.  Any help would be appreciated greatly.

you will need to set a whelping box. I would also reccomend having the vet do an x-ray to determine how many and how large the pups are. you can get books at the library or even info on the net on the whelping process. woodhaven labs has very good info on what to expect. just google  woodhaven labs and you should be able to find it.

Thank You Rainsmom!!  Your suggestion really got me on the right terminology to answers.

We went and had our second visit and xray -- 4 babies for sure. It was a great moment

We also went over things like if it doesn't go so well here's what you need to know.  You know I have been a bit nervous, I'm sure glad Dr Alicia said if you have to make the umbilicord tie first then cut, and don't cut between the tie and dog.  I read last night about having some floss on hand and picturing a ballon??

Yesterday I rearrange house to make room for mom and pups and made a whelping box--I'll take pic's later and post.

Thanks again!! And here's to a beautiful Day!

Well I rearrange furniture which really helped my bedroom (it really needed a cleanup) and this is what I came up with. We don't use this hallway or frontdoor so I hope the puppies will be alright.

Well, I better put my two cents in as well. First of all, I want to thank you for taking this dog in when it needs help the most. Most people would have left her there and who knows what could have happened! Okay, so first I am going to bombard you with questions…LOL! How much does the dog weigh? (Better stated, what would you estimate as her weight if she weren’t pregnant?) Did the vet estimate how old the dog is? If so, how old did he estimate her to be? Now, it is important to be prepared for any doggie emergencies. You should have handy scissors, alcohol, a bulb syringe, lots of paper towels, blankets a soft towels. Make sure to have the whelping box lined with paper towels, preferably a soft brand of paper towels, such as Viva, so the surface isn’t to rough for the puppies. Help the mother deliver the puppies, just don’t sit and watch. When it comes to umbilical cords, it is better not to cut them with scissors, it is better to tear them with your fingers. If you HAVE to cut them, first wipe the scissors with alcohol, then cut, then wipe the scissors again. Make sure the puppies are breathing, and after the puppy is delivered, suck out any air or goo in its ears and mouth with the bulb syringe. Dry the puppies with a towel, and then put them to nurse. If the mother doesn’t allow them to nurse, don’t worry to much about it because some mothers wont allow them to nurse until all the puppies have been born. If she still refuses to nurse them, you may have to hand feed them. I will post more info later when I get the time, but know I have got to go. Also, you should probably post this in the “Breeding” Forum on Dog Channel. You will get plenty of advice from us breeders there! Hope this helps!

The Puppies arrived!  Wow! A super experience that started about 1:30 in the afternoon and ended at 5:30.  She just looked at me an whimpered and then started looking for a place  that was secluded. I felt relieved that everything was going to go quickly. We decided on my bedroom (oh well, best layed plans just changed).  So, the first one, she depended greatly on me! I was suprised that she needed me to lean on and push. It was really a bonding moment. Then everyhour another was born. They are all different. One looks like a chocolate lab, another looks like a bulldog, another looks like her, and one is pretty unusual.  She did a fantastic job. She did everything. Christi, she is a very young dog probably her first heat.  When she came to the house her teets were red and hanging.  Once she had some nutrition her teets improved in color and height. She gained about 7 pounds in 2 weeks. Thank you for all the well wishes.  This is a great subject to converse about because I didn't know anything and even though I know more I still don't know enough. I would like to say that there was hardly any mess. I had a couple of spots on the floor and I cleaned that up with proxide and water. Here is some pic's.
