Teddy Hollander passed away today. Most of you know that he’s been very sick for the past couple years. His defiance in the face of advanced heart disease impressed his doctors, my friends, and our fellow Beachwood Canyon dog walkers, who were never sure whether Teddy was going to fall over, or chase their mutts down the street.
Fact is, Teddy was the sweetest dog on the planet. This one story tells you everything you need to know about this courageous little fellow. I had him for a year before deciding to get Alice. He was a full-grown male, and she was a two month-old little runt. Alice’s breeder warned me that Teddy might be jealous, and might hurt her without meaning to. Keep her alone in a baby pen for a while, she advised. So the first time I went out and left the dogs alone, I bought a baby pen and put Alice in it.
When I came home, I was immediately alarmed because Teddy did not greet me at the door, which he normally did. I ran back to the bedroom, worried that something horrible had happened. Well, somehow Teddy had jumped about 4 feet and got into the baby pen. He and Alice were sound asleep, nestled tightly together like little commas. And that was how it would always be. When they went on their walks, they moved lockstep, two little commas wandering down the sidewalk, each movement in unison, like a school of fish. And it all came from Teddy, who watched over Alice like a father, a big brother and an adoring fan. Alice, always (and still) the jealous barker who would steal the slower eating Teddy’s food; Teddy, the patient, sweet guy who was simply happy to make everybody happy.
He was just a little schnauzer, but he was a great friend.

I am so sorry for you! I understand how you feel...I lost my beloved Golden Retriever a few years ago to heat stroke when I took him out for a walk. It is good to have a couple dogs because you have the other to help you get through the pain. I don't know what I will do without my two Shilohs, Brandy and Bruno, but I know one day they will cross the rainbow bridge, and there is nothing I can do about it. At least I will have them for the short time so I can love and care for them, or better said, they love and care for me.
