I know that experts say dogs communicate with their barks, eyes and tails. Sometimes, really smart ones even use signal flags! But Happy has added one more form of dog-talk. He shakes his head. Now, at first, I thought this was because he had an ear infection. But after a check-up revealed nothing, I realized his head-shakes each meant something different.

There’s the early-morning shake. That one means, “Gotta wake up here!” When I don’t serve Happy breakfast right away, the head-shake means, “Hey, make with the Beneful, Jim!” He will also make this movement if I try a substitute dog food. That one means, “No, I’m not gonna eat Larry’s Discount Chow!” If he hears a dog in the distance, that one gets two distinct shakes. And yes, if I put on Metallica, Happy bangs his head to the beat.

Does your dog do this, too? Or, are my discount meds not working? Let me know, dear readers.

Um, no. My dog does not do that. But it might be cool to see a dog bangin his head to the beat some the music.

oh im so happy u made this topic, u made a memory pop into my head (:

This was years before, i was in front of my house looking at my dogs through the front gate (we were having a stare contest). Anyways, i gave up (my dogs take these things too seriosly),
Simba left but Bandito kept on looking at me, i said "Fine, you'll get a piece of hotdog when i come inside, ok?" and nodded to him

Then he nodded back! A sign of him understanding, or him mocking me??? Either way i'll remember that forever. As for the head shaking, only when i pour water on Simabs head :]

the head shaking to the music is mostly me

We still miss you Bandito.Always in our hearts and prayers*****

I'm so glad you understand. Happy's been shaking his head even more since I wrote this. Glad I don't have to take dictation from him.

LOVE THAT NEW PUPPY!  XXPG

I bought my mini doxie a parka because it's cold where we live.  I put it on him recently for our daily walk.  I had noticed for about a week when he wore his parka he would shake his head and body like he was still cold.   It took me a while to realize that he wasn't shaking because he was cold.....he was shaking because the hood on the parka was too big for his head and he couldn't see.  I laughed for days about the fact I couldn't see that Scooter couldn't see.    Gotta love dogs!

Thanks,

No pepe doesn't nod her head!  She talks to me with her butterfly ears - fascinating to watch as they move individually.  Say certain words, like outside, and her ears perk up.  Sounds pretty normal, actually.  Still it is fun to watch her reations!!!

Doby will shake her head "Yes" sometimes when I ask her questions. She also perks up her ears and will wake up if we say "TREAT". If we need to put it on our shopping list, we have to spell it out. A cat I know we have to say "The T Word" when he's around cause he even knows the word when we spell it! Animals are funny!
