I decided about a month ago to switch my boys to a raw food diet. I joined a raw community and I have done everything right thus far, but my Pom has had chronic diarrhea since we started the raw. He had a tapeworm, which he passed during his neutering [lucky me] and has since only had very rare accidents in the home and none in his kennel. I kept hoping the diarrhea would subside, but then tonight he left me a gift in our living room and I realized it's time to try something different.

I was thinking about trying a pre-made raw dog food with him along with supplements and/or herbs to support colon/digestive health to see if I could help him get his normal stool back. Does anyone else feed pre-made raw dog foods or have any suggestions on ones I should try?

Thank you in advance.

I have not tried pre-made raw as it is all ground up. chewing the bones is a great mental exercise as well as it helps keep the teeth clean. I would go back and look at what you are feeding. If you are just starting you should just be feeding 1 protien source such as chicken. If you are feeding organ meat you might want to reduce or even remove that for now. when I started feeding my sheltie raw she only got chicken legs/wings for 2 weeks then I slowly added some liver (chicken). She was eating chicken for a month before I added other meats. also sometimes when they have the runs they need a little more bone in their diet. you can add canned pumpkin to firm up the stools.

also it could be the type of meat you are feeding. pork seems to give my girl the runs no matter how slow I add it to her diet.

I have been feeding only chicken for the past month, still diarrhea. I noticed early on that Kuma has a sensitive digestive system. Neither of my dogs exceed 15 pounds and I noticed that the bones were too sharp and too large when I gave them, so I have no interest in such a practice. For dental care I give them Petrodex chews with an enzyme formula that sticks to their teeth to break down the plaque. It was recommended to me by someone whom I trust and is also a veterinarian technician.

Did you following your worming medication(for tapeworms) such as Safe-Guard Canine Deworming  to a capital T?  I think you need to give it 3 days in a role.   If it has been a month since you last dewormed I would go ahead and do it again... since you did have a worming problem, just in case there were eggs and they've reinfested your pooch.

If that doesn't take care of the problem then switch back to his old food for a couple of days just to see.    If he has an overly sensitive stomach he may just not be able to handle the richness of a raw diet.

They told me they gave him appropriate medication and that I did not need to do anything further, he would be fine. He still hasn't been going as much or having kennel accidents, but perhaps I will try a de-wormer on him and see if it helps.

With them having only been on chicken for a month I am trying to gradually bring new meat into the diet and would like for it to go as smoothly as possible. Since we're in a formerly never-lived-in apartment I was hoping to keep it as nice as possible, but Kuma sure is making it hard for me! I'm going to be calling Stanley Steemer before long.

If you are not feeding bone, this would explain the loose stools. Raw bones are safe for small dogs, particularly chicken bones. I feed my two dachshund pug mix puppies who weigh about 12 lbs bone every other day. Without bone, the raw diet is lacking in essential nutrients, and a pre-made raw may be your best route.

Hi there,

Not sure if you have found your answer... However, if you are not using raw chicken bones which as long as there is some meat around the bone a small dog will be fine eating it all.  Than you may look into lessen the amount of veggies you are feeding your dog.  If you are feeding too much veggies without the bone than there will be loose stool.

In some rare cases dogs can have issues with chicken (cooked or raw) if adding chicken bones, and less veggies doesn't harden her stool switch meats to beef, pork , or in some very touchy dogs Lamb.  Each time you switch meat try it for a month though and see which one seems to be working better for her tummy.
