This is more out of curiosity than anything else but my female English bulldog has a herniated navel that was repaired by her breeder. My husband and I have mulled with the idea of perhaps eventually having pups, this is a HUGE maybe type of thing as we're leaning more toward spaying, but would the previous hernia be a concern during pregnancy? I emailed her breeder about it with a no reply as of yet, my vet seemed unable to give me any real answer and I can't find much on the web (I could be searching the wrong thing I suppose). If we do decide to breed her it would only be once and then she would be spayed to live out her days carefree. She is from champion bloodlines, her grandsire Kahuna won several regional shows and a national I believe. I emailed her breeder for a show history but she's still not replied to my email at this time.
As I said it's more of a curiosity though. I have mixed feelings about breeding. It's more like a 75% toward spaying kind of deal but I just have to know so I can have all the information I can. I am aware that with breeding English Bulldogs comes great care and attention. I have done my homework in great detail about the breed.

Hmmm....Not sure, maybe, maybe not. You would have to find out. I'm a breeder, but never had to deal with that. Cute bulldog, sure she would have ADOREABLE pups! (Just remember Bulldogs ussually have to have C-sections, so be willing to pay for it!)

Yeah, I know about the c-section and AI that she will probably need. We're not too concerned with that really. I've asked several vets and I didn't get any real substantial answers from them. Some say she'll be fine, others say don't breed. Her breeder recently got back to me and said she believes that Kaylee's dam had a repaired herniated navel and has had a few litters of pups so I dunno. I mean I would like to get one litter from her from spaying but I dunno. I'll just keep researching it and ask more vets.

She's currently 5 months old so if we decide to breed it won't be for another year and a half or so. Pricing will all depend on the stud and how well things go.
I just love the breed though and adore her completely. Though she's getting to be a rather large lap dog.XD

I called around to at least 20 vets in my area about my question and most answers were the same, she'd be fine. Thanks to those who commented.

| I don't know an awfull lot about this but this is our experiance and the advice our vet gave us. I got a shih tzu pup about a five days ago now, and we didnt notice till we got home that there was a small lump on her tummy. We took her to the vet to get it checked out and she said it was an umbilical hernia, which the breeder should have told us about. The vet advised us that if a dog is born with an umbilical hernia then you probably shouldnt breed from it as it is a genetic problem that can be passed on to the pups. However she also said that an umbilical hernia can ocur if the umbilical chord is cut off too close to the navel. she said that even if this is the case and the the the dog gets pregnant, than the pups umbilical chords in her tummy may not attach right on to her. It didnt matter to us as we don't breed our dogs, we just wanted to get it fixed so that Cara (the pup) is comfortable. This is just the advice that the vet gave us and i would strongly advise speaking to a vet about it, as maybe your dog has a different kind that is okay to breed from. All the best of luck either way
