I completely agree.

Peta is the terrorist - not the breeders.

However, I'd venture to say that there ARE dog breeders out there who don't give two damns as to what happens to their breeding dogs and the puppies. My friend and I had an argument about pound dogs vs. pet store dogs. She told me off because she said her cousin's dog accidentally had puppies so she gave them to the pet store to sell. I sat there thinking, how does a dog ACCIDENTILY get pregnant? She said that her cousin didn't know her dog was pregnant. -eyeroll- If you leave an intact female outside in the middle of their heat, they are GOING to attract attention. And besides, she must have been outside a looong time for that to happen.

She then ventured to tell me that she'd never ever purchase a dog from the pound because they are always so sick. Uh DUH! It's from the stupid, uneducated breeders of this world. She told me that pound puppies are more expensive. I just looked at her and laughed. We've had purebred rotties and collies and other BEAUTIFUL looking dogs and they cost about $100 with $50 back to go towards a spay/neuter. The dogs at the pet store cost anywhere from $300-$1000 and did I mention that most of the dogs there are Heinz 57s?

Anyway, back to PETA, lol. They take the tiniest bit of news and turn it into something disgusting. Either that, or they take this really reallly reallllllly bad bought of news and make it stay alive for a year or two. I just don't care for them. My cousin lives and breaths by them... pathetic.

As long as you can teach me, I am willing to learn. -Myself

I have volunteered at the Humane Society where I live and support several animal welfare agencies - but no way will PETA ever get a cent from me.  Their policies are more detrimental to animals than helpful.  In my opionion they just don't get it that dog show breeders are helping to produce dogs that are healthy.  Good breeders test their dogs to screen out hereditary disease with the hope that someday those diseases will not be as much of a threat.   I will admit that I don't  like puppy mills that breed dogs for sale in pet stores - these folks encourage the continuation of health problems.   If the folks at PETA were smart they would realize that breeders who breed dogs for shows are their friends not their enemies.

PETA will be the death of the dog show world at one point or another.
They get on my nerves-which is an understatement really-with all the junk about the breeding and showing.
To me they equal terrorists trying to do good...which makes it bad, lol.

Sadly there IS much wrong with breeding, there is also a lot right with it.

Rather than focusing on organisations like PETA it would be nice to see breed registrars and the wider industry doing more to shut down puppy mills and farms. This could be as little as educating the public.

Fialure to do so lends authority to the accusations of registrars and the industry existing just to generate income.

As pedegree owners, where is our legitimacy when we have breed standards such as (until being exposed by the BBC) the UK South African Ridgeback owners codifying (under the aegis of the Kennel Club) the killing of puppies born without ridges!!!

It is a shame that when bad practices are highlighted we try to shoot the messengers rather than hanging our heads in shame and dealing with the issues.

Totally agreed with that statement.
Organizations influence more people, especially their members, and when members are involved with an association/organization, it spreads a lot quicker into the dog world.

Thanks Kota

I was concerned that my post might be misconstrued as one of a PETA apologist.

What? Those...rawr. Peta needs to be stopped. seriously. They are going to kill our world! I second the BBQ idea who ever had that one.  I like it...though I don't really eat meat. I'll bring the deviled eggs!

All due respect, I do not feel that conformation shows are bad practices. Many of the breeders that go to the show are unethical, but the practice itself is not. Coupled with good judgment, genetic health testing, and working ability conformation can be helpful.
I've been doing my part to stop bad breeding for quite a while now. Educating people, studying to become a good breeder, etc.
I have little respect for PETA or most animal rights organizations. Just because I say so doesn't mean I'm ignoring issues.

Don't get me wrong, your's is a logical post and I agree with much of it.
