| I have a shih tzu that is doing great in obedience. She loves it, very happy, thinks it's all a game... but I can't get her to take and hold things. As soon as I try, she gets all 'slinky' and doesn't want to do anything. Otherwise, she's very good at tons of things! She heels great, very reliable on sits/downs and stays, I have target trained her, and she thinks that's fantastic, I've taught her how to push open and push closed doors.... but she won't take anything and hold it? Any tips? It's very frusturating -I always start training off as a game, but once she realizes what I'm trying to do, she gets upset and refuses to do it.

I've never even done training that much, and this probably won't help, but I don't know it might. I have a shih-tzu at home and his very favorite reward for training is PEANUT BUTTER!!! Does ur dog like it?? He is so focused when that jar is out. Good luck in Obedience!!!!!

| Is whatever you want her to hold and carry too heavy? Hmmm, try working with him BEFORE playing, first of all. I mean, kids don't get recess before starting school for the day. Working is not quite as fun as playing around. plus, when she figures out playtime is something to look forward too when training is finished, she'll be more motivated. My dog doesn't really like to hold things either. (maybe a squeaky toy....) I'm not sure how I tought her to hold things... I actually think I got her to hold things by giving her one of the smelly peanut-butter flavored oatmeal bars It was still in it's wrapper, but she would grab it in her mouth and hold it for a second. I would reward her for taking it in her mouth, and then eventually I'd run away a few steps and when she followed with it in her mouth, another reward. I eventually managed to switch it to other things. She doesn't really care about anything she has except bones, so most dogs would probably be more willing to hold it for longer. Luna didn't (and doesn't really) like anything that she can't chew to ribbons. Also, I am trying something new to help her be more driven. I tied her favorite squeaky toy to a long rope-thingy (one that she wouldn't try to chew instead) and ran around with it trailing 8 feet behind me. She loves chasing it around and freaks out over it. It's a great game! I', not really sure of what I was talking about to begin with so I think I might need to stop now.
My dog is smarter than yours!!!
