We hear President-Elect Obama plans to add a dog to the family as soon as they move into the White House. As dog lovers, this is music to our ears. The White House never seems quite complete without a family canine.

Michelle Obama has been quoted as saying she wants a shelter dog and we encourage this plan. There are so many dogs in shelters and rescue, homeless through no fault of their own. The Obamas’ leadership role in this regard would set an admirable example.

Since there are allergy issues in the family, I would recommend considering the Poodle, as well as the many other low-shedding breeds that are available in sizes from small to large. Poodles themselves come in three size varieties: Toy, Miniature and Standard. Within the smaller breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier and the hairless variety of Chinese Crested are all fine choices. The Obamas seem too sensible and well-read to fall for the “poo” and “doodle” designer dogs so l am optimistic that good sense will prevail on that front.

Among medium-sized breeds, the Portuguese Water Dog is an engaging, high-energy breed that fares well with many allergy sufferers.

Larger breeds to consider include the exotic Afghan Hound and the fun-loving Irish Water Spaniel.

Since the Obamas value education and research, I encourage them to read up on the various breeds, have some family conferences with their daughters, and take their time choosing the breed that is just right for them. They should consider the energy level of each of their family members, their willingness to groom and exercise a new puppy, then discover what makes each breed tick. There is so much more to a dog than its physical appearance.

Now, let’s turn it over to our faithful DogChannel constituents. What dog do you think would best suit the Obamas as they prepare to move into the White House? Do you have any tips you’d offer to prospective new dog owners?

I hope they dont get a doodle but they are considering a labradoodle or a golden doodle. I think they should get a standard poodle or a portugese water dog!

What is he considering?  How bad are the allergies?  If the allergies are bad, the smaller the dog the less Dander and the less shed.  Smaller dogs like Mini Poodles or Crosses with those Is best from the standpoint of Allergies. Havanese's Are good with low dander also, Bichon Frise's are also good.  We have Very bad allergies in my family and he does just fine with my Schnoodle.  I hope ultimately they don't listen to what the public wants but what THEY want.

I hope they really do adopt from a shelter.  What a wonderful way to put needy animals in the spotlight and set an example for others.  There are so many wonderful dogs out there waiting for a good home.

Personally, I am partial to the Mini Schnauzer.  But they need to adopt based on what works with their family dynamics.

Dogs Rule!!!

A shelter dog would be great. I'm not against buying from breeders as long as the breeder is a good one, but getting a shelter dog would be a great example to the American people.
I also hope that they choose the best breed for them.

a puli is too much work for them, the hair and dreadlocks, I do not think so.
