I have an 11 week old Shih Tsu puppy and am doing reasonably well house training her by taking he outside in stead of paper training her first. She sleeps through the night and wants to go out first ting in the morning. My problem is that she eats her poop if I am not right on it to clean it up. If I want to put her on her long leash out side, I have to be out there with her at all times. This is not a very good situation, especially first thing in the morning. I was hoping to eventually just put her out and bring her in after about 10 or 15 minutes. Is this a temporary thing or will she always do this?

To start training her you will need to be outside with her when she goes out. What you can do is teach her to leave it. Start with a treat in your had and teach her to leave that. then when you go outside with her, put her on a leash and wait for her to go. after she does tell her leave it and take her away. Then praise her. It will take a while because this is a difficult habit to break, be be constant. Don't give up

Thanks so much for your advice. I think your suggestion will work quite well, because right now, that is how I have been training her to go out side to do on command, #1 and #2 with a treat with each. She is doing very well with this.

Hi I just wanted to comment on your puppy eating her poo.  I have a rat terrier who was then a puppy who would eat my older dogs poo.  The vet recommended feeding them both pineapple rings or crused pineapple.  Dogs love the taste but when it comes out the other end, they won't touch it.  It worked very well for me and very quickly!!!  They think they are just getting treats.  Good luck on the house training and be patient she will get it.  But if she still continues to eat poo just remember the pineapple.

Hi I have  a 10 week old Yorkie puppy her name is Bree. She is a poop eater also but Im finding out its not just her poop she eats. We have some cats that are around the house and I believe her to eating their's also. What do I do? She is doing really well with the housetraining. Only a few accidents in the house. But she does not really like the cold weather. We will spend about 10 min outside and she stays near my feet to stay warm then when we go inside she is mess the house. But during the day she does wonderful with the potting outside. I read the post about giving her pineapples to help her not eat hers but what do i do about eating the cats mess? thanks

is she eating the kitty crunchies out of the litterbox? or is she finding them outside? if she is getting them from the litterbox you will have to move the litterbox to an area she cant get to or gate it off. In my house the litterbox is in the bathroom, and we have a cat door in the bathroom door. so the cats can get in, but the dogs cant! if its outside the only thing you can do is supervise and teach her the leave it command. hopefully she will grow out of it. also what do you feed her? eating poop can be caused by poor nutrition, or by eating to fast. when a dog eats to fast it comes out pretty much the same as it went in, so the dog eats it because it smells to them about the same as it did when it was in their bowl. cat poop is eaten because cat food has a higher protein content than dog food so when they poop ot really appeals to dogs gross I know!!

We have a litter box too and my dog goes there when I'm not. He's doing better now though

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one going thru this! My 12 wk old Boston also eats his poop. Its driving me nuts. I heard that if we are crate training him, he'll do this but it's still not right. Any luck w/anything yet? I might try the pineapple thing. See if that helps

If you add crushed pineapple to its dog food the puppy will not like the taste and will stop eating it's poo.
