Can anyone provide good articles on the raw diet? I read a bunch last night, but would like to learn as much as possible.

In my area, finding certfied organic meat is hard, and when I do find it, it's exceedingly expensive! I decided to go with Nature's Variety Instinct and Prairie for kibble. N.V. also makes a freeze-dried raw in medallion form that Bubba loves!! He does not like the consistency of raw meat, but loves the freeze-dried raw. Anyway, it's a bit pricey, but he does real well on it and has never had a shinier coat. I think my way is a whole lot less expensive than the BARF diet. You can buy raw, meaty bones from your local butcher, too. They usually don't cost much. Good luck to ya.

BTW, Instinct is grain-free, Prairie has selected grains.

Thank you.

I am interested in the prey model type raw, mostly. I've done what I'd consider enough research, but since I'm a beginner in raw I wouldn't trust my own judgment there, if you get my drift.

if I was to feed raw I would also go with the prey model as opposed to barf! I do not feel dogs need vegatables at all. If you want to feed veggies that is fine but I dont feel they need them. now pumpkin thats a different story it is great for a dog that has the runs or is constipated!

I HIGHLY recommend that you pick up 'The Complete Holistic Dog Book' by Jan Allegretti & Katy Sommers, DVM before you make your food switch. It has GREAT feeding advice!!!!

Raw feeding is great and I highly recommend it! I believe in Prey Diet (Only meat) Dogs are carnivours, they do not need grains and veggies, to me I see them as fillers to make it cheaper....

Hello, there is some web groups on yahoo that you can join that helps you switch over to raw food.

Veggies are a great things for dogs however, they must be turned into goup (which isn't always just veggies sometimes it has: Apple vingar, 2 eggs, egg shells and so on).  Dogs, in the wild do eat veggies however, they are in the tummy of the prey of the animal they have killed.  Which means the veggies have already been chewed up and all that good stuff.  This allows the dogs to eat them with ease.

Even in the wild some wolves will even eat plant life for food its not common but does happen even without its kill's tummy.

The switch over isn't as hard as many would believe.  Depending on the size of your dog, and what breed it is as well as how active the dog is depends on how much you feed your dog.

One of my Goldens is very active so she gets about 1.5 pounds of food each day, the bascily means 8oz of meat in the morning and 8oz veggies at night with an oragan here and there, and their turkey necks for their bones they need to eat.

My little golden who is still growing is getting close to two pounds of food a day, as we are trying to put some weight on her for winter.

The groups I am part of are really nice and most of them have a lot of infomation to download about the diet.  Good luck!!

yes wolves do eat the content of the stomach of small prey such as rabbit, but in the larger prey they eat, like deer they shake the contents out of the stomach and eat the stomach only. Wolves are oppertunistic carnavoires so yes they will eat some vegatation but it is not necissary for their diet or well being.
