Hey Spencer! Thanks! Obedience training makes all the difference. You and your dog will really enjoy it and it will make a huge difference in your dogs behavior when in public. Just remember to always be reinforcing what you learn at your classes on your walks. Practice and reinforcement make perfect.

That is so neat that your dog can walk off-leash like that. That is such an important trick because sometimes you might not have a leash. Like in the case of a house fire or something. You could have your dog heal while you get him and yourself out. And also it's so adorable in public .

Yes, Zacks2cute, it is pretty neat, and I'm proud of him, but it takes a lot of work and repetition to get a dog to do that.  You're right, I never thought about a disaster but if there were something like a fire and we had to exit the house I'm 99% positive that he wouldn't leave my side. Cole is continuing his education this summer. He's enrolled in late May for advanced obedience classes and we're planning on possibley doing agility classed in July. I don't know for sure if we're going to do the agility yet. He seems to be older than we thought he was. He was a weird find, persay, PM me if you want to know more and I'll tell you about it. Anyhow, we have our first obedience show in five weeks and I'm already nervous! I hope that we can come home with Cole's CD. (Companion Dog rating) I think he'll do great.

My old dog used to sit, stay, roll over, lay, hold a treat on his nose till I told him he could have and and then he would flip it into his mouth, and when I fed him he would lay down in front of his bowl until I told him Go get it so I didn't have to race his face to the bowl when I dumped his food in.  He also caught treats, a cute thing he did but I didn't directly teach him was he would pick ripe blackberrys off the bush and eat them.

If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.  ~Phil Pastoret

Ralph is a husky/shiba-inu (5 months) so far he can sit, down, stay, wait, doggy door manners, give kisses, dance, leave it on paws, leave it anywhere, loose leash walk/run, fetch & bring back, heel -- I had him in puppy kindergarden, and is now in basic obedience (1st grade)-- in a few weeks he will start agility.

Buck knows basic tricks like sit, shake paw and lay down.  He knows where to go if we say go to bed.  He also knows which toy is which if we tell him what to fetch.

We aren't allowed to teach "tricks" to our guide dog puppies, but Blitz can "leave it" like a star! He knows the following commands: Sit, Down, Stay, Leave It, Stand, Come, (Formal come...Come to my left side and sit, facing the same direction as me. It's so that when he's with his blind master they can figure out exactly where he is) Here, (informal come. ) and he'll HOPEFULLY learn Forward, left, right, halt, find the (fill in the blank) etc...To lead a blind person!

As I said, he can leave it very well. He'll balance a treat on his nose, paws, back, anything. We once even put a bird on his back and told him to leave it. (Mind you...He's a lab)

Okay, maybe that turned into a brag post..

my little peek a poo jack.ll will play dead.. if you tell him BANG he rolls over onto his back and lays still ( except his wagging tail)  it is so cute because a lot of the time he goes down pretty slow.. looks like a real shooting scene in a movie..

Bubba knows all the basic obedience commands, plus he's real good at most of the advanced obedience, except long sits and downs when I'm out of sight. He heels off-lead like a champ. Bubba will roll over, give ya 4 (he doesn't have 5) and give you a "high 8". He loves training classes as much as I do! He's so great!!
