Since there has already been many comments addressed to the rather disturbing comment, I will refrain from further fueling the discussion. I will say though that if you wouldn't eat poo why would you make your dog?

Anyways, I've often wondered if perhaps dogs eat poo because they're lacking in minerals like horses do. In the wild, horses will eat feces to get some nutrients they might otherwise be missing. Perhaps give your pooch a vitamin supplement and see if it helps. That's the only thing I can really think of. I have a bit of a problem with my corgi about trying to wash my son's dirty butt while I'm changing him.:XD: I suppose I'll try a vitamin supplement as well.

Personally, none of my dog's ever enjoyed eating poop. I actually forced them to eat their poop as a punishment during housetraining. A little unorthodox but it worked brilliantly. My advice to you is to actually feed your pup poop on a regular basis. He will slowly become tired of it as the appeal of eating the poo wears off, some of mine even enjoyed it a little at first but soon were disgusted when it was placed in their food. Then again, I am speaking only of Standard Poodle experience, if you have some sort of lower breed or mutt I have no advice for you.

How do you think this is even Remotely okay?! When you where going through potty training did your parents force you to eat your own poop!! I certainly hope not. That would be considered child abuse, it is no different with a dog, its dog abuse! think about it.

I have heard feeding your dog little bits of pineapple with its dinner will make the poop taste bad.. but I have never had a problem with poop eating so I haven't tried it myself. Also, I believe somebody said this already, but I have heard too that it is often due to bad nutrition.

I cannot believe you would force your dog to eat it's own poop . In my opinion if a dog pees or poos in the house it is mostly the owners fault for 1 not training the dog and 2 not taking it out enough. I don't think any vet would say that it is okay for a dog to eat his own poop. Think about the kind of things that could be on the poo. especially if it has been sitting out for a little awhile. It is just not smart!!!!

I dont think thats very snitary at ALL! and one more thing.... i dont think that you should be saying if they have a lower breed or mutt ect.. is not very nice. if you have an opinon like that i suggest you keep it to yourself... it can be hurtful to somepeople saying your dog is better than thiers or theirs is a "Lower breed" than yours.i dont aprecate that kinda of stuff here on D.C. and i dont think anybody else dose too.

My puppy's trainer said that all dogs do it females more the males. Females do it because that is how they take care of the puppies. They will do weather they spayed or not. Anyway, Female or male they tend to do it more during the the winter then summer because they freeze up and they like ice pops. One of the owners in my puppy's class said they tried hot sauce and it made their dog like more You can try the other tricks but the best thing to do would be clean it up soon as you can and make sure they stay away from it until you can clean it up. Puppies no matter how much you feed them.

I would never make my dog eat its poo!!! That is so wrong!!! I would call your vet for tips and see what he/she has to say!!! I will look up info for you. Keep us posted if you find a solution!!!

WOW how can u force a poor little puppy or dog to eat their poop thats sad : ( but always just tell them to stop and say bad dog my dogs will smell their poop but they never ate it my little one had but she stopped and that was when she was a puppy i think its a fase maybe but im not sure but they dnt do it anymore. they just sniff it i think thats ok.

all dogs go thru a phase, where they eat poo, sometimes its kittylitter poo.
Or poo in the sidewalk.

You have got to be kidding me!!!! I don't want to sound mean but your advice is WAY out there and punative. The OP has a genuine problem and needs some advice that promotes healthy behavior. You are offering the LEAST helpful advice and I wonder whether you need to re-examine your 'training' methods or just admit that you abuse your dogs and rehome them.

I am absolutely 100% with Rainsmom! It is absurd to think of something like that (what's wrong with you?) and IMO you should be arrested and your dogs should be rehomed!

Furthermore, Rainsmom is correct that Border Collie's are rated as #1 in intelligence, and you could at least get your facts straight before posting them! Also, I would be REALLY interested to know what your Vet thought of your "method" of "housetrainin'"

Also, I don't feel that ANY of our dogs are BETTER than anyone else's. They are, every one of them, PERFECT for THEIR OWNER! I just wish your dog's owner was PERFECT FOR THEM!

personally I find your attitude to be very negative and not what we would like to see on this board if you dont have anything nice to say dont say it at all forcing a dog to eat its poop is disgusting cruel not to mention can cause health problems also you must have a lower breed too because the border collie is ranked number 1 in intelligents

molly, Angel isnt new, she has been here long before I joined and I joined in 2006, a year and a month ago wensday. lol

if star starts to smell it I pull him away and say No, bad dog. He stopped trying to smell it after a while.

Sorry. I didn't know this had been posted. I usually don't get to stay on long because I'm busy during school months, so I don't get to look at many posts. I haven't been in the Dogs section for a long time and haven't seen what's there. I try to check out as many posts as I can, but sometimes I can't. But even so, thanks for telling me about this.

anyways monet had a real big problem with poop eating you can buy stuff from the vets called forbid it works pretty good I have also heard adding a spoonfull of plain or vanilla yogurt will stop that bad habit but I never tried it so I dont know if it works other than that keep the yard cleaned up so she cant find any poo as for why they eat it some say its lack of nutrients from a low quaility diet others say its just boredom I dont know its just gross!!

my vet told me to sprikle a little meat tenderizer on food and it will give them a bad taste and will break habit in a week or two
