He's 2 months old and was kenneled until I got him a few weeks ago. He's been having some dominance issues and gets rather nasty sometimes. The latest incident was tonight when I was changing my son and he was trying to "clean" Colt's rear end. I gently pushed him away so I could get Colt's diaper back on and he snarled at me. That just doesn't fly with me so I flipped him over onto his back and towered over him, just as another dog would. I scolded him and told him firmly no with a spat to the nose with my finger...just enough to get his attention. He then initiated to bite and another nasty growl. I gently, yet firmly, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and raised him up just so that the tips of his back paws touched the ground, very much like a momma dog would. Again, I gave him a firm no. After I scruffed him, he seemed stop being aggressive for the time being. I'm generally not a spanker because they can become demure from it so I'm just trying behavioral techniques that another dog might do with him. I've had to do this several times though...at first it was over food, the second was over sleeping and now not wanting to give up something he wants. So far it has worked and he's no longer aggressive over food or sleeping. Am I on the right track with him though? I've been establishing myself as his alpha but it's not pushing it too far is it? Sometimes when I get onto my son for getting into something he's not supposed to, Tycho will kind of hide. I'm afraid it might be making him timid but I'm not sure what other techniques to use. Any advice? Trust me, my manners have not been abusive, just assertive.

He gets plenty of exercise, we play fetch almost all day long, on top of walks and play time in the yard so I try to keep his energy sated. Could it be that he's just still not adjusted to the pack order and the home environment? Perhaps it will just take a bit more time. I've never had quite such a snappy pup before. He's got a lot of spirit. I don't want to break that spirit but I do want him to respect me as his leader.

Ralph

I have new pictures of myself in scrapbook and on profile. It's frustrating cause I know she doesn't mean to and she is getting better but sometimes she just can't help it. We tell people no baby talk and to ignore her for a few minutes when they first see her but you know some people just don't listen. I also know it will take time for her to completely control her bladder but I have heard of dogs also never getting over this, our vet said that this is normal and should eventuallystop.....but I know others have this problem so I thought maybe people with experience could help me out.

Any suggestions on how to help her break this habit? I have been debating if or when to spay, trying to research the topic. I have no intention of breeding her, my questions are solely based on her health.

The more reading I do- online and otherwise, the more confused I get. I am beginning to question having the surgery done at all.

I would appreciate any insight. We have a neutered male and my dogs are constantly supervised or contained- accidental breeding is highly unlikely. The male was neutered at age 3- fully mature but for reasons other than health. I was under written contract to keep him intact for his breeders gene pool. He failed to reach her standards, she released me of the obligation and so I had him neutered.

Obviously, I have already decided to allow her one cycle. I have read that neutering prior to reproductive maturity can significantly increase the risk of hypothyroid and osteosarcoma- both problems in this breed. I have also been advised by two breeders that early altering can have negatives affects on performance dogs- something I hope to do with this one.

Thank you for any advice!

What is your puppy's favorite activity?

When my dog Macy was a puppy she liked to play with her doggie friend, Bo who is as Golden Retriever.

How can you tell if your dog is listening to you

I can't seem to tell if my dog is listening to me when she is in trouble.Do you guys know how to tell if your dog is listening to you

Choosing a Puppy

i would go for the Yorkie...

waiting 4 puppy

i know i certainly am. i get it in July, oh I can't wait! any tips for a Yorkie Puppy?

Hip Dysplasia in puppies

I think my Newf puppy is showing signs of hip dysplasia. HIS TRAINER TOLD ME THAT NORMALLY SHE WOULD ADVISE AGAINST IT, BUT SINCE HE'S SUCH A GOOD, WELL MANNERED BOY, THAT IT WOULD BE OKAY... THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE TWO PUPPIES WITHIN A YEAR OLD OF EACHOTHER... WHAT WOULD YOU SAY.??.. I REALLY WANT ANOTHER.. BUT, I DON'T WANT TO RUSH IT IF ITS GOING TO BE HARD TO TRAIN OR RE-TRAIN....????? THANK YOU!!:

basic command training

Ok, Here I go with the advice seeking again. It is amazing how much you don't remember when you haven't had puppies in a long time. At 3 1/2 months we are learning the "sit" command with the girls, and they are doing better than I thought. You can get a beagle to do anything for food, but not for very long..... My question is, at what point can I realistically expect to move on to "stay" and, then for how long? I realize I am wotking with limited attention span, and having the siblings makes it twice tha challenge. Fred and Barney were not formally trained when they were alive, but they knew the basics, I just don't remember when or how it got done. With Daisy and Pickles, I have 3 kids and 4 parrots that I want to be safe, so I want to have more control over these girls thaen the boys. All of the family is working with the "sit" training, even my 4 year old. Thanks for any advice you can give.

She was doing so well....

I've had my puppy for about 3 weeks and potty training was doing good for awhile, but now I'll take her out and she'll go pee and I'll praise her... and then I'll keep walking her around for her to go number 2 but she refuses to go I spent almost 1/2 and hour outside with her earlier only to finely give up come inside and have her poop 20mins later... this has been happening for about 3 days now and I have no idea why she's doing it all of a sudden when she was doing so well... Could it be that I have to praise her after she does both? Any input would be helpful!
Alecia, Brian and Izzy

Crate Training....Help!!!!!!

Any tips on what I should do? I'm I doing something wrong?

I need help! How do you crate train. I have a 9 week old greater swiss mountain dog. I put his crate in a quite room, he does not go in at all. We put the Kong in there with a treat nothing...he is really good during the day...but a night we do not want to leave him wondering the house alone..during the day he will sleep on the floor or in my son's bed. When he wakes up from a nap he will use the wee wee pads (he's such a good boy). But at night we put him in the crate (i feel so bad) and he will cry for about 1/2 hour and then fall asleep. Once he is in the crate I should leave him in and not take him out until morning?

Thanks,

Luca's Mama

dose your dog like to take a bath

Thank you for takeing my poll

Did I do it right?

Well, obviously Spencer being 16 months old I am not still housetraining him, but I wondered if I did it the right way or if the way I did it might have contributed to some problems. The way I did it was, I had a crate in my room with a divider so he couldn't pee on one side and sleep on the other. I took him out to go potty right before bed, then I would put him in the crate and ignore his whining until he went to sleep. But then, maybe an hour or two later, he would wake up and whine again. At that point I would take him out. I had heard to take him out every time he whines (except right after he goes potty when you know he is fine) so did he need to go out that often? I tried ignoring him a couple times, but then he always peed in the crate. But since I took him out every time he whined, was I training him that whining in the crate meant I would let him out? Because, fast forward a year, he has separation anxiety. He can't be left alone in a crate or he whines non-stop and pretty much destroys the crate. He does fine if he is left to wander the house or if he is in the crate with another dog. I contribute part of his anxiety to the fact that he pretty much never left my side, so he never learned that life was not ending when I left him. He was either with me or with a dog at all times. But, do you think the way I housetrained could have added to it? I ask this because at some point I plan on getting another puppy, I just want to start off on the right foot!

HELP ME!!!!

WELL I NEED HELP I DONT NO WHAT TO DO.
