I know many dogs react well to treats - so maybe have him keep a supply of treats on hand to reward positive steps. As long as he doesn't force the dog to approach him or accidentally corner him, with your patience and postive attitude, trust should eventually start to be built. Dogs remember things and the younger the dog is, the easier it will be to break this fear then an older dog. First thing that comes to mind when a guy comes over to your house is probably, "how will my dog react?" do you then feel a little worried? If that is the case then your dog can sense that which tends to make the dog a little weary. If you want to break this habit you have to show your dog that the guy isn't mean. Try different sessions with the guy petting the dog. If the dog backs away, don't force him to visit with the fella. He will come around after he senses that the guy won't harm him. This will take a lot of patience and time. One last question, does your dog bite or growl at the guy?
