Why not just "food"? So, we started feeding our Poms meals of chicken breast, cottage cheese and grated cheddar cheese (for the picky older one) and you can imagine it was a hit! Price is not as big a concern a quality and healthful ingredients when purchasing dog food. We also supplement with a high quality natural canned food and dry food (Innova). Oh, and for treats, our dogs were hooked on the bad chicken strips from China too. We finally found a great natural chicken strip made in America and it is sold on-line. It's called Kona's Chips if you want to check it out at konaschips.com At least with good products, you are not buying dog food guilty of the Four D's: Dead, Diseased, Dying and Decaying (meat products).

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Angel8- To be completely honest, I am in the middle of Nowhere. It is 26 miles to the next town and NOTHING for another 125 miles east. South is 125 miles to the next town and north- well it's 75 miles to a smaller town. I mean NOTHING in between. West is not an option, (unless I spent days on dogsled or horseback). It's the price we pay for the beauty around us and the slower pace.

While the boarding kennel that carries Innova is "close" (about 10 miles), it is on a curving road that is absolutely treacherous during the winter months. I love my dogs but I don't relish pushing through 3 foot snow drifts in 4 wheel drive with a steep dropoff beyond the shoulder. I did it once. No fun. Scary. And then the kennel sits 1 mile back in a canyon off the main road- that is icy uphill on dirt, or better yet- mud.

Anyway- I ended up writing the story you avoided. Sorry. Thanks for listening to my woes of finding dog food!

You might try local feed stores and health food stores, if you have any. They sometimes carry dog food, or might if asked. There are likely a few others in your boat.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Gosh...I feel so stupid...haha. Guess I left out "availability" too. Like you, "Ingot", I also live in a small town and the nearest Walmart is around a half-hour drive away. It's pretty much the only store I can get dog food at. But, I don't know about your Walmart, but it seems the one near me has a pretty big variety. I haven't tried a lot of their dog foods, though. Who knows...they're probably crap. But, I guess availabilty can be a bit of a problem for me too, because their are probably really good dog food brands that aren't available near me. When you live in the city, you are probably more likely to have a big selection to choose from because of all of the different stores. I know I don't know of that many dog food brands just from being on here. On topics about dog food, I don't know of many brands mentioned. I only know of the ones sold at the Walmart closest to me. But, anyways, I'm gonna end this before this paragraph turns into a story.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

it wont let me vote.

But, I go for Ingredients.
If MEAT is not the 1. Ingredient, I will not buy it.
RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

I forgot- Availability. It's a big one for me. I live in a small town where it's a 2.5 hour drive to anyplace larger. I have limited choices since I've ruled out the Wallyworld 45 minutes away. I get Blackwood from a local musher, I can get Innova or Nature's Logic from a local boarding kennel. The pet store is carrying something called Mulligan Stew- but I'm leary of it. Of course the vets carry Science Diet. Anything else of quality would require I pay freight charges on top of the price- something I just can't afford. I feed Blackwood 5000, catfish and potato with excellent results- it's about $60 for a 40lb bag and has completely cleared up Ingot's food allergies and Dodge grew his coat back.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Price, Ingredients, Vet's opinion, and how well Spencer does on it.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Ingredients are important. It really isn't about the price it's about how well the food ingredients are produced. You want to get the cheapest thing and the worst food and end up having your dog sick, or would you rather get the better stuff and not have to worry about your dog getting sick?

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

I use a really good raw based kibble and love it. Any food I've ever tried has had to go thru the "water test". I take a piece or three of kibble and leave it in a cup of water for 12 hours to see what the rate of swelling is. Not much is good. Price, I think, unfortunately, is an issue with all of us, but I think we all just want a food our dog will eat and do really well on. I've done without so my dog can eat the food he eats. I LOVE MY DOG !!!!!!!!!

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

What other people tell me.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

ingredients and price

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Ingot (7/15/2008)
Ingredients, price, recommendations, and maybe most importantly, results.

I probably should have put results on the list.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Ingredients, price, recommendations, and maybe most importantly, results.

RE: What influences u on the dog food u get?

Brand and price

What influences u on the dog food u get?

Price & ingredients influence me.
