Banfield is NOT part of petsmart. Also, my dog is fed a raw diet & being only 10 months old, he has recieved all the recommended vaccinations, but from this point out, he will have annual titers to see exactly what he needs in the way of boosters. I happen to have a very good relationship with my dog's doctor...that doesn't happen by chance. Too many people don't make the effort or take the time to establish a good relationship with their vet. They should. If one vet is bad, don't go back. Find someone you feel comfortable with and someone who is willing to take time to talk to you, discuss things. The comment about no annual checkups because your dogs don't need it? I find that rather arrogant. My previous Rottweiler was the picture of health on the day he was diagnosed with cancer!! I hate to think how much pain he would have had to endure if he had not been checked by his vet! I guess the only things I personally agree with are the raw diet and not over-vaccinating.

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

maximus (8/13/2008)
I have not and will not use any veterinary service that is part of a chain store - period. Most people thing that dogs need to go the vet for every little cut or thing. My dog is 13 years old, and he isn't on any meds, he has no health issues, no arthritis, he didn't go to a vet for several years until just this past year. Our vet dont care about the money, he cares about the dog. He tells you what he thinks. I believe the secrect to a healthy dog at an old age is not seeing the vet all the time.

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

I have not and will not use any veterinary service that is part of a chain store - period. It's important to have a relationship with your vet. It was sounding a lot like a McDonald's franchise and that really bothered me. I still prefer my local private practice vet but then, it's not like I have much choice either.

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

Ingot (8/3/2008)
I must apologize for the following stupid questions. For 12 years, I have been living in the middle of nowhere. Our nearest PetSmart is 6 hours away and I went there once about 4 years ago to buy a nice rolled leather collar. I knew they offered training classes and grooming but that's it.
Is it normal to drop a dog off for an annual checkup? I make an appointment and stay for the weigh-in, exam and vaccinations, then take my dog home. The only time I've ever left a dog at the vet was for boarding, removal of porcupine quills or neutering.

With this "Banfield" arrangement- do you actually have a relationship with your vet?

Something in the situation really bothers me. I would certainly get a lawyer if I felt I had proof of what you have shared.

I can only speak for myself about my own experiences. That being said, let me answer your questions. Most of the time, my vet at Banfield does the annual check-up with me present. If I had another appointment, or couldn't wait for some other reason, I could drop Bubba off and pick him up later. Otherwise, the only time he would be dropped off would be for a medical procedure that would require anesthesia. Yes. At Banfield, I make my appointments with one of two vets there that I know well. There's nothing wrong with the other vets, I just feel very comfortable with my two. I've dealt with them through some very difficult times with my previous rottie. Banfield only rents space from Petsmart, they are not part of them. Banfield is very committed to excellent pet care and anyone can contact corporate with questions/concerns/problems. No. I don't work for them, I just love MY Banfield in Exton/Downingtown, PA !!!

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

I must apologize for the following stupid questions. I take my pets to a Banfield pet hospital, & I live in the state right next to you! I have gotten the impression a couple times that a few of the vets don't know what the heck they're talking about, like when they told me my cat tested positive for feline leukemia & I got all worried, then they tested him again a few weeks later & he was negative!!! I hear things like this & it really makes me wonder why people talk down to me & treat me like I'm stupid because, I've been reluctant to take my pets to a shelter to have them discount spayed/neutered, Because I can't afford to have them done at a regular vets office, but the people at the animal shelter here are even dumber & more careless than the vets!!!!! & I don't trust them! They gave away my mom's favorite dog because they said somebody else claimed he was their's, & the shelter people KNEW he was ours because he had been in their multiple times with my other dogs, because my mean neighbors kept letting my dogs out of my yard & then calling animal control on them! We took them to court too, but we never got the dog back!

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

I can not tell you anyting about Banfield.
I just use Petsmart for Food and supplies.

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

I'm sorry to hear about your bad vet visit. The vet then said that he was relunctant to call the owner for fear of that she would be upset. Mike ended up dieing and she sued the vet for everything they had and won. you should do the same thing. The worst part about this experience though is that the vet acted like the death was nothing to be upset about and that a dog is easily replaced. Well f.y.i. it's not!!! Mocha (my dog) and my hopes that your dog is doing great and feeling wonderful and that you sue and win.

RE: Does Banfield and Pet Smart Care About your pet

I appreciate your advise, I am thinking about it. I took Midnight in there around 8:30 am. I called and called to see if he was ready to be picked up. At 3:00 p.m. the receptionist stated that he was still not ready. Getting worried I went to Pet Smart, Banfield Hospital around 5:00 only to learn that they had injured his mouth and he was bleeding through his nose. I learned that the Vet who owns this Banfield had injured him. She had him in a small confined pin with a leach around his next tied to the out side of the pin handle. The pin was small for a large cat. My lab is 2 years old and weights 51 llb. He could hardly raise his head with out choking. I contacted Banfield Inc and Pet Smart, neither corporation has responded. My dog is on the wellington Plan. I had to pay the Banfield 45.00 dollars to sedate him so that she could check the status on his injuries. She to me to take the dog out of her Vet. the next day my dogs mouth begin to swell. I called the Vet she did nothing. I called another Banfield they referred me to an emergency hospital in Union City. I took my dog there. I paid around 257. 00 dollars to have my dog treated for his mouth injures. Help!
