It was sick and so sad. The man was a hoarder and thought nothing was wrong with what he was doing. And turns out he has mental illnesses ( not suprising). They have to tear the house down that the smell and everything else is so bad....And he might not even serve any jail time, Honestly I feel he should serve life for all the pain and suffering for all those poor dogs. We have a chance to protect racing greyhounds from an uncertain future through legislation but need thousands to send a letter to the Government by 22nd July so timings are really tight!

Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds are retired from racing. The fate of many of these greyhounds is unknown and huge numbers simply ‘disappear’.

We’ve set ourselves a target to get at least 20,000 people to respond by 22nd July – this is the government’s own deadline for the close of their public consultation on the welfare of racing greyhounds. The more people that respond to the government consultation, the more chance we’ll have of influencing what goes in the new legislation.

For example, just some of the aspects that we’re calling for the regulations to include would be:
* One system to track all greyhounds from cradle to grave
* One open access injury database
* Independent regular inspection of trainers’ and breeders’ kennels
* Greyhounds must be transported in cages which enable them to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably
* Greyhounds to be humanely euthanased by a vet only if rehoming is not an option (e.g. extreme behaviour / irreparable injury)
* Vets to be specially trained and have financial independence

You can join the campaign here -

The sooner we can reach 20,000 people, the more chance we'll have of protecting racing greyhounds from cradle to grave. If we lose the race, so do greyhounds.

I hope you can help!

Katie Houghton, on behalf of the RSPCA

Dogs help relieve stress in college freshman

Getting your child ready for his or her first year of college? As dog lovers, this is music to our ears. The White House never seems quite complete without a family canine.
Michelle Obama has been quoted as saying she wants a shelter dog and we encourage this plan. There are so many dogs in shelters and rescue, homeless through no fault of their own. The Obamas’ leadership role in this regard would set an admirable example.

Since there are allergy issues in the family, I would recommend considering the Poodle, as well as the many other low-shedding breeds that are available in sizes from small to large. Poodles themselves come in three size varieties: Toy, Miniature and Standard. Within the smaller breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier and the hairless variety of Chinese Crested are all fine choices. The Obamas seem too sensible and well-read to fall for the “poo” and “doodle” designer dogs so l am optimistic that good sense will prevail on that front.

Among medium-sized breeds, the Portuguese Water Dog is an engaging, high-energy breed that fares well with many allergy sufferers.

Larger breeds to consider include the exotic Afghan Hound and the fun-loving Irish Water Spaniel.

Since the Obamas value education and research, I encourage them to read up on the various breeds, have some family conferences with their daughters, and take their time choosing the breed that is just right for them. They should consider the energy level of each of their family members, their willingness to groom and exercise a new puppy, then discover what makes each breed tick. There is so much more to a dog than its physical appearance.

Now, let’s turn it over to our faithful DogChannel constituents. What dog do you think would best suit the Obamas as they prepare to move into the White House? Do you have any tips you’d offer to prospective new dog owners?

"Jon and Kate Plus 8" Get 2 Dogs!

I'm a huge fan of Jon and Kate Plus 8! Kelley Davis said she had an extra $400 in cash to deposit after working extra hours as a physical therapist. She told the News & Observer of Raleigh that on Friday she planned to deposit the money, but it wasn't in her pocket.

She remembered leaving it in the bedroom and it occurred to her that the family's 2-year-old greater Swiss mountain dog, Augie, might have eaten it.

Davis, 42, said when she took Augie for a walk Saturday, she found parts of three $100 bills and five $20s in his leavings. She washed them with a garden hose and hopes to find enough pieces to exchange them for cash.

A professor at the North Carolina State University Veterinary School said the money shouldn't hurt the dog.

newsvine.com/_news/2009/03/18/2563225-nc-woman-hopes-to-cash-in-after-dogs-deposit

what dogs shouldn't eat, but do

An article i saw and thought i sh0uld share,
Top Ten things a dog shouldn't eat, but Do.

No. 10: Sticks. You bet. They splinter, poke and tear up a gut at times. In my experience, it’s not just the stick, but the peritonitis which may result from the “poke.”

No. 9: Hair ties and hair ribbons. Yes, girls smell better. So do their accessories. Dogs can’t help but like picking these attractive things up and chewing/swallowing them.

No. 8: Bones. We have a lot of barbecues and cookouts around here. Most people know to keep chicken and turkey bones away from pets, but, yes, pork, venison and beef bones can sometimes cause trouble in the intestines of dogs. The best rule? No bones at all.

No. 7: Corn Cobs. Yes, just had one week before last. Funny how they’ll go down an esophagus but get caught in an intestine.

No. 6: Chew Toys. This is unfortunate because these are marketed for dogs to chew on for either dental care or entertainment purposes. I have even seen dentrifice-purposed rope toys in dogs wrap themselves around the intestine, causing strangulation of the bowel in segments once the rope “unwinds.”

No. 5: Balls. Racquetballs, tennis balls, toy rubber balls, yes, I’ve seen them caught in the throat, esophagus, stomach and intestine in my practice life. The good news? At least they light up well on the x-rays.

No. 4: Rocks. Rocks in solitary form or an amalgamation of small rocks together can really clog up the works in an intestine. Why do dogs in particular eat rocks? Do they need minerals? Are they that bored or that hungry? All I know is, they do. The good news diagnostically is that, like bones and balls, these are easily spotted on x-rays.

No. 3: Panty hose. What a fetish! Nylons have an interesting texture. Whether it’s that texture or the scent, we’ve seen our share of these, both wadded up and acting as linear foreign bodies. Some women tell me that we’ve removed some of these weeks after they thought the hose were missing. A testament to malleability, I guess.

No. 2: Briefs/Panties. Equal time for men’s underwear here. I’m talking about tighty-whities in most cases, but, they’re tinted a different color by the time we remove them. As far as women’s panties go, I remember a day last year when Dr. Palermo performed a side-by side intestinal surgery the same time I did one on another dog.

And No. 1? Socks. That’s so common, it’s not surprising. Foot odor is very attractive to dogs, and socks get thrown loosely on the floor, particularly by men. I remember a time when I was at the Auburn University veterinary school when a dog had a monogrammed sock removed from its intestine. When the surgeon called the woman who owned the dog after surgery, her first question was “what are the initials?” Her second question was, “Can I come and get that sock so someone else doesn’t see it?” Yikes, don’t want to get in the middle of that one.

There you have it, so the next time you just throw your socks on the floor, remember that you might have to have the vet take them out of your dog later! Now you have no excuses for not putting all the dirty laundry in the hamper!

dog shoplifts from grocery store

here's a youtube clip of the story off CNN

youtube.com/watch?v=_3OQK6qMRGk

PETA Commercial Turned Down

The PETA released a new commercial made for the Super Bowl. Urgent Appeal!

Rescue Dogs Cats In China From Eaten. Urgent Appeal!

I received an e-mail from Jill Robinson, the CEO and Founder of Animals Asia Foundation urgently appealing for our help save these suffering and frightened dogs and cats in China.

Complaining about the atrocity of China of its extreme cruelty to dogs and cats is one thing but it can only truly make a difference if you take actions.

Here is a link to read about the development of dogs and cats meat trade in China:

Also, please go here to sign the petition:

I'm not affiliated with Animals Asia Foundation. I do donate money to them whenever I can to help save these very unfortunate cats and dogs in China from being brutally slaughtered and eaten.

Please read this heart wrenching and urgent appeal from Jill Robinson, the CEO and Founder of Animals Asia Foundation:
______________

[b]Dear Annie,

I hope you had a great New Years’ Eve and are looking forward to the Year of the Ox!

For us, it was a bumpy start to the year – elation at being involved in the first major rescue of “meat dogs” from a trader in China, but also sadness at seeing the state of the dogs and the knowledge that millions of others are still trapped in this brutal industry.

It all started on New Year’s Eve when the Qiming Rescue Centre, a dog shelter in Chengdu, asked for our help. The authorities in nearby Pengzhou had just confiscated 149 dogs from an unlicensed trading station (after a tip-off from Qiming staff) and the dogs were on their way to the shelter.

Our first sight of the dogs was shocking.
A small team, including one of our vets and a vet nurse, quickly grabbed medical supplies and headed for the shelter. We arrived just as the truck carrying the dogs pulled in. I couldn’t believe what we were witnessing! It was horrible in every sense of the word – the stench (so familiar from our visits to live animal markets), the blood-curdling cries coming from the cages as the terrified dogs bit into each and, as always, the terrible feeling we all get when we look into the haunting, sad eyes of these beautiful animals.

I hate to think how long they had been in those cages, many of them packed in so tightly that they were piled on top of each other. Some of the dogs were shaking with anxiety, while others were rigid with fear. Many were suffering terribly and showing symptoms of parvovirus, distemper and kennel cough. Most were skeletal and their coats filthy from being excreted and urinated on by the top layer of dogs.

Our volunteer vet nurse Helena tends to the dogs.
Animals Asia is health-checking the dogs, treating their wounds, vaccinating them and, sadly, euthanising those that are just too sick to save or so aggressive that we could not rule out rabies or other diseases; these dogs are also a serious risk to other dogs and handlers. The process is ongoing, but we hope many of the dogs will recover and find good homes. However, these are the lucky ones – this year alone, millions of other dogs (and cats) will be slaughtered in the most brutal manner in hellish meat markets in China.

Many of the dogs were chronically ill and weak.
They will be crammed together into tiny cages, loaded onto trucks and driven day and night for four or five days with no food or water (if they are lucky, they might be hosed down, just to keep them alive). Once at the markets in southern China, they will be bludgeoned across the face, stabbed and bled out, or slowly, torturously beaten to death in the misguided belief that their meat will taste better if they are panic-stricken at the point of death. The same fate awaits millions of cats – some of them are even boiled alive.

What is so encouraging about this rescue is that it was a local animal-welfare centre that alerted the authorities about the unlicensed trader and, for the first time, the authorities actually confiscated the dogs! This is a wonderful example of Chinese people standing up and saying “no” to the cruel dog-eating trade – and it underpins our education efforts to stop demand and bring this industry to an end.

Many of the dogs were wearing collars and a number of them were pure-bred; these were possibly stolen pets; others had been collected as strays from the streets, bred in dingy cages on dog farms or raised in rural houses purposefully for meat.

At the moment, Qiming Rescue Centre has only cramped room to house these new dogs – at least temporarily – as we revamp and upgrade the facility and help them recover from their terrible trauma while they await adoption.

Animals Asia’s Christie comforts some of the survivors.
We have much work to do, as the bitterly cold winter months close in on us, including more weatherproofing, extending the roof to cover many more dog runs, concreting the enclosures and runs and making dry, wooden-box beds. With the added expense of food and medical care, this is going to be a costly process.

Already, dogs that ran away whenever we walked into the enclosures are now slowly approaching us with cautious tail wags and trusting eyes. Some will stand nervously as we gently stroke their fur – but when we stop they will turn towards us shyly asking for more. BOL I hope you will tell your friends to vote for me . Of thousands and thousands of videos that were submitted, mine has been chosen as one of the top 12 finalists. All of the top 12 videos will be shown on Thanksgiving Day on NBC during the commercial breaks of the National Dog Show. The show starts at 12 noon central standard time. My video will also be included in the Marley & Me DVD when it comes out. I could win a trip for 2 for my human mom and dad to see the premiere of the movie. Yippee, I am chasing my tail in excitement. It would be neat if one of Dog Channel's pups were to win. Very hot. It seems a family's dog was lost and got hit by a car. Animal control took him and meanwhile, the family had posted flyers and called the shelter every day with no sucess. 11 days later, the lady who had found the dog saw the flyer and called the family, telling them the animal control had taken the dog. It turns out that he had been euthanized and nobody even bothered to call them, when the dog had identifying tags on him. To make it worse, when the family went to claim the body, they found him in a TRASH CAN along with a dead cat. They, to my understanding, didn't even try to contact them! No regard for the dog or the owners. The animal shelter says that they are taking this very seriously, and that if any negligence is determined on their part, they will take action. Too late for poor Buddy, though.

Looking for dog issues at one place.

Hi, to all the dog lovers .I love dogs and I myself own a Black Pointer. I took Midnight in there around 8:30 am. I called and called to see if he was ready to be picked up. At 3:00 p.m. the receptionist stated that he was still not ready. Getting worried I went to Pet Smart, Banfield Hospital around 5:00 only to learn that they had injured his mouth and he was bleeding through his nose. I learned that the Vet who owns this Banfield had injured him. She had him in a small confined pin with a leach around his next tied to the out side of the pin handle. The pin was small for a large cat. My lab is 2 years old and weights 51 llb. He could hardly raise his head with out choking. I contacted Banfield Inc and Pet Smart, neither corporation has responded. My dog is on the wellington Plan. I had to pay the Banfield 45.00 dollars to sedate him so that she could check the status on his injuries. She to me to take the dog out of her Vet. the next day my dogs mouth begin to swell. I called the Vet she did nothing. I called another Banfield they referred me to an emergency hospital in Union City. I took my dog there. I paid around 257. 00 dollars to have my dog treated for his mouth injures. (AP) - Responding to a report of animal cruelty, authorities found dozens of living and dead animals in a home infested with fleas, maggots and rotting carcasses. The owners - a woman and her adult son - were charged with animal cruelty.
"It has to be the worst case of animal abuse in the history of Vermont," according to Animal Control Officer Josephine Guertin.
Five cats, two ferrets, a lizard, a gecko, a rabbit, a python, a gerbil, a tarantula, a chinchilla, a guinea pig, a tortoise, a mouse and a malnourished dog were rescued. Found dead were an iguana, a white rat, a hedgehog and at least 15 cats and kittens in various stages of decomposition.
Also found was a decomposing animal of unknown type in a pot on a stove. More than a dozen partially frozen dead animals were found in a refrigerator freezer.

The animals had been denied food and medical care, according to Sgt. Bill O'Hare, of the Caledonia County Sheriff's Department, who responded to the scene.
Pauline Harpin, 70, and son Paul Harpin, 41, were charged with animal cruelty and cited into Vermont District Court on Sept. 8.
"The stench was overwhelming, between the urine and feces," said O'Hare. "As soon as you step in, you're covered head to toe with fleas."
On Wednesday, O'Hare and three deputies served a search warrant on the house after receiving a report of severe animal cruelty and threats allegedly made by Paul Harpin to shoot anyone who tried to take the animals.
Inside, they found neglected animals including a 4-year-old Labrador mix who had apparently been living amid filth and water in a basement since it was three months old, Guertin said.
"She's as starved for affection as she is food. She still has diarrhea," Guertin said.
One cat had an upper respiratory infection, and a tortoise was found with a deformed shell, according to Guertin.
Pauline Harpin, who was covered in flea bites, had to be decontaminated by a hazardous materials crew before being taken by ambulance to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, where she was treated and released.
Guertin and a veterinarian who responded to the scene also had to be decontaminated, according to O'Hare.
The Harpins signed voluntary surrender forms allowing the live animals to be removed and adopted once they are rehabilitated. For now, the animals are in town custody.
The Harpins, meanwhile, are staying at a motel after being advised to stay out of the house until it is cleaned, according to O'Hare.
"They said they didn't know why their animals were dying. They were very angry we were taking the animals away from them, and they didn't offer any information. They simply said `We're taking care of them, but they're dying, there's nothing we can do.' The response they gave was very strange," O'Hare said.
Animal cruelty is punishable by up to $2,000 in fines and a year in jail.
___
Information from: The Caledonian-Record,

PETA against Jessica Simpson

The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is against Jessica Simpson because according to sources wore a shirt that said "Real Girls Eat Meat". Scientist have discovered that a happy dog will wag harder to the right and a anxious dog will wag harder to the left! This is how they tested this: (Direct Quote) "Thirty mixed breed dogs, familypets, served as the reasearchers subjects. Each dog was put in a cage specially fitted with cameras to capture the precise angle of the dog's tail movement. The dog was then shown four seperate stimuli his owner; a stranger:a friendly cat : and an unfamiliar intimidationg dog- for one minute each. Upon sight of their owners all 30 dogs wagged their tails more strongly to the right side, it was the same for the cat and the stranger, but both were more subtle than when they saw the owner. The large unknown dog caused all of the dogs to wag their tails more to the left. Concluding that when a dog felt positive, or curious the tail wagged to the right.
