This means careful screening and evaluation of each person or family interested in getting a puppy.

My regret for turning the lady down was only short lived. Ironically, a family in Ohio visited me that day and gravitated toward Gigi. They visited her every week until she joined them on their beautiful farm. I deal with people all the time who are not the best match for my puppies, so it is rewarding when my puppies are placed where they are destined to be.

An ethical dog breeder should be present in a pup’s life the instant it comes into the world. How a breeder cares for and interacts with a pup has an immense affect on the pup for the rest of its adult life. Human socialization is important because most breeders sell their puppies as pet companions first and foremost. All breeders should practice ethical breeding instead of treating breeding as a business and dogs as money makers.

According to The Caring Corps, I practice responsible breeding,

The reputable breeder sells puppies directly to the individual consumer – never sells or consigns to pet shops. Buyers are invited – indeed required – to visit the breeder’s premises, to see where the puppies were born and how they’re being raised. Buyers are likely to see the mother dog, and sometimes the sire, living on the premises, where they’re treated as beloved family pets.

In addition to being a responsible breeder, there is ethical breeding. I don’t breed for a living, I don’t breed for money and I have a lot of spare time on my hands to continuously study the breed. I truly care about the Great Pyrenees, the betterment of the breed and the families who adopt my puppies. Therefore I will not sell my puppies to a puppy mill or a pet store.

Many money oriented breeders have a very busy schedule. They usually whelp more then a few litters at a time and breed numerous breeds at the same time while juggling day to day tasks. What they don’t understand is that they are not making a significant profit. The money that breeders put into their dogs day after day is easy to forget, while the cash flow from selling puppies seems profitable (NEBA). Another problem with overloaded breeders is their lack of time to whelp litters. I have spoken with many such breeders and they speak commonly of still born puppies, or puppies dying in the first few days. This sort of thing is spoken of casually, as if all breeders have the same problems. I have never had a still born nor lost a puppy, because I take an active roll in whelping. You would be surprised to know that during a puppy birth it may take the mother six minutes to stimulate her pup to breath, if she does at all (Pet). The longer a pup goes with out breathing the dumber it will be. My female can have up to 16 puppies in ten hours easily. Obviously, if I were not home to help her deliver the pups, there would be some dumb pups and some dead pups. As a breeder I pride myself in having a giving my dogs the best Vet care, food and supplements. This ensures that my puppies have the best start that they can. They are whelped indoors to facilitate human socialization as well as socialization with other dogs. According to Dr. Tracy Leonard a Basenji breeder, this socialization is necessary for a puppy’s adaptability, “As a puppy matures, it is important that he is familiarized with humans and the world outside his immediate home.”

Responsible breeders should potty train their litters. This takes time and effort but the reward is a cleaner puppy area, healthier puppies and happier puppy owners. Some breeders who don’t have time to clean up after their litters will throw down hay or wood chips and change it out when the smell gets intolerable. That is how puppies end up with worms that won’t die off, parasites, skin problems and bad potty habits. I start potty training when the puppies are three weeks old. I section of the whelping box by placing construction paper where the pups potty the most. Then I keep that area dirty for a day or two and amazingly the puppies learn that the paper is for potty. In the wild their mother would have them potty trained by this time (Misty)

Money hungry breeders try to whelp litters with expensive and rare qualities. For example, some breeders shoot for all white Great Pyrenees, grey Newfoundlands, or small headed Bulldogs (to avoid expensive C-section). This type of breeding is destroying all types of breeds. An all white Pyrenees is a stunning sight, but when you start breeding white to white you get more unhealthy Pyrenees with more hereditary problems. A Bulldog will suffer from genetic problems such as skin allergies, blindness and deafness. A grey Newfoundland may suffer from skin allergies and baldness. These are problems that an ethical breeder should avoid at any cost. There are ways to get healthy rarities in a breed, but bad breeders do no practice those methods due to lack of money, experience, time and knowledge.

When a busy breeder such as one that runs a puppy mill, sells a puppy, the sale is nothing more then a business exchange. You sign the papers, hand over the money and you get your pup. You are lucky if the breeder gives you some puppy food to take home. My puppies go home with food, vitamins, treats, toys, Nyla bones, a blanket (with mommas scent), a care page, health records, and AKC papers. In my puppy contract I state that it is necessary to keep in touch with me via e-mail at the least. Most of my buyers pick their puppy around 3-4 weeks, so I send them pictures and updates up until they take their pup home. When my puppies leave I always feel an emptiness, so I build relationships with my buyers and keep an open line of communication with them. A breeder at a puppy mill does not have time to go out of his/her way for the puppy’s new family.

Good breeders have no problems with letting potential puppy owners into their facility. It would be to many peoples advantage to live close to a breeder so that they can check out the conditions were their new puppy lived for the past two months. In my case the facility would be my living room. Which many people appreciate that the puppies are always being cared for. When I choose a puppy, I visit the breeder and the puppy’s parents. That helps me decide whether any of the pups will have the characteristics I am looking for. If you can visit the pups early on, around 3 weeks of age, you can see the differences in their personalities. Knowing the parents and all the pups’ personalities, you have a good chance of picking the puppy that is a good match for your needs. This active approach to puppy adopting ensures the new family and the breeder that everybody including the puppy will be happy and lessens the chance of a bad placement. Unfortunately, you can not do this if the breeder is out of state. If the breeder is too far to visit, you will have to rely on pictures and the breeder’s word. Today there are too many scams that are becoming more advanced and online purchases can not be trusted. Another downfall of placing a puppy in a home out of state is either a stressful car ride home, or a $275 shipping fee and stressful flight. I refuse to ship a puppy because it is too stressful. However, I am more then willing to take a round trip to meet families half way for only the cost of gas.

An ethical breeder should care about the wellbeing of their puppies for life. My puppies will never go to a shelter in situation where they can no longer be cared for. I have signed contracts stating that in any situation, the dog will be returned to me. I am more then happy to take my puppies or dogs back. I would either keep the returned dog or re-home him/her. Sometimes re-homing can take years, but it is ok. In that time I can fully analyze my dog to place him/her in a home that would accommodate his/hers needs. I have a lifetime responsibility to all of my puppies and I will always fulfill it.

Breeders should stop trying to turn breeding into a business. Puppy mills and pet stores don’t care who they sell their dogs to nor do they care about the dogs they are breeding. The life of one puppy has tremendous meaning to the family that adopts it, so breeders need to treat these puppies as a precious being, not a dollar sign. If breeders strive to be more ethical and caring, then the business breeding will dwindle and more people and their pet companions will be happier. To be honest, I would just adopt 2 more dogs. I guess, I just wanted a part of my dog, to stay with me, for my dog's kids to be with me. I was considering breeding, calling me a backyard puppy mill, when I have never even bred is a tad harsh. Even if I bred her, it was going to be once. Maybe I won't breed her, maybe I shouldn't, I was just asking for thoughts and opinions. I said I've had 3 litters in 15 years, I beleive. One was because we were stupid. One was a rescue, and one was a foster. The last time my personally owned dog who had puppies, was in 1994.

The insinuation, that I am backyard breeder is unfounded. My dog I have now, came from one, and I turned her in, I actaually called the news. I called my local paper, to point out she breeds every 6 months, and sells Christmas puppies for more than summer puppies. My dog was covered in fleas, the nasty breeder actually put "no fleas" in her ad. This was the 1st sogn she was a bad breeder. Who says "No fleas" The breeder my dog came from is a peice of crap, and I care. The breeder called the police on me, for turning her in.

Think what you want, I wanted 2 more puppies, and wanted a family connection. So I considered breeding her. That is NOT a backyard breeder. I'd give the puppies for free, if I thought a good person would take them.

The Value of a Puppy

I've been reading our local classifieds- the pet section which I always scan for no good reason. It always makes me crazy.

When I purchased my last 3 Alaskan Malamutes, I recieved AKC papers, microchip, OFA and CERF copies on the parents ,(even grandparents on one); a five generation pedigree full of Conformation Champions and various obedience, agility, weightpull and sledding titles; a health guarantee/ contract and the knowledge that my dog was produced with forethought by a breeder that likely did not make a profit. (#1 was purchased in 1996 for $400, #2 was purchased in 2004 for $800, #3 was purchased in 2007 for $1000). I'm not buying a puppy, I am reimbursing a breeder for their investment into this litter and their planning for the next.

My local paper today:

Goldendoodle- $1600

AKC "Giant" Alaskan Malamutes- $900

Purebred, unregistered Labrador- $400

AKC Cocker Spaniel- $300

Border Collie/ Heeler mix puppies- free

Any dog or puppy (designer dog, mixed breed, purebred etc) from our local shelter- $50

The average adoption fee from breed rescue $250

I KNOW breed rescues see no profit- they invest so much more into saving the unwanted, medical expenses and all. Our local shelter spends more than that just on housing, let alone altering, vaccinations or medical expenses and they charge even less.

If there was no money to be made, fewer people would breed indiscriminately...

What do you think drives the pricing? What do people really think they're paying for? What IS the value of a puppy?

Ideas to change that?

Purebred Health

A friend of mine plans to eventually breed Belgian Tervuren. This only only a step in achieving her ultimate goal of becoming an AKC breed judge and eventaully, group judge. We have been discussing breeding practices.

One of the main topics we are excited about is health clearances. Of course, she plans to screen her future breeding pairs thoroughly. (Her first hopeful is not yet even born, though hopefully concieved.) We have been talking about the possible merits of not stopping that once the breeding takes place, but continuing the screening throughout the lives of each puppy produced.

The question is- do you think there is merit in having each puppy produced OFA'ed on hips, thyroid etc and CERF'ed, ( and whatever else applies to said breed), regardless of their own breeding future? My dog will never be bred but wouldn't his genetic information be helpful for those using his father, mother, brothers, sisters,& cousins etc in their lines? I know responsible breeders are still gambling with genetics, could this practice be yet another helpful tool in calculating the risks?

What age??

what is everyone's oppinion on what age should you bring home a new puppy, and why. I ask this because alot of people say 8 weeks minimum 10-12 weeks being the best age. I have read some books like Dog Training for Dummies and Sheltie Talk. Both written by respected trainers/breeders. that say day 49 (7 weeks) is the best age to get a puppy. with 8-12 weeks being the worst age due to the fact that puppies go through a fear imprint stage at 8 weeks.

to quote Dog Training for Dummies: At about the 49th day of life, when the puppies brain is neurologically complete, that special attachment between dog and his owner, called bonding, begins. It's one of the reasons why 49 days is the ideal time for puppies to leave the nest so that bonding with the new owner or family can take place.

Bonding to people becomes increasingly difficult the longer a puppy remains with his mother or littermates. The dog also becomes more difficult to train. With each passing day, the pup loses a little of his ability to adapt to a new enviroment.

In addition, with delay, there's the potential for built in problems.

The pup may grow up being to dog oriented.

The pup probably wont care much about people.

The pup may be difficult to teach to accept responsibility.

the pup may be more difficult to train, including housetraining.

please no arguing friendly debates only

Its summer, so start baking for your fav canines!

Quick Homemade Biscotti Resoruces: Vet America

for more buy the book Ingredients:

1 egg

1 cup (140g) store-bought corn muffin mix

3 cups (675 ml) water

1 cup(120g) whole wheat flour

1lb.(455g) raw pureed beef liver

Directions:

1.Place all ingredients in a large bowl. I am a responsible dog owner, please allow me to explain more of my situation.

As a new member here, maybe I should have properly introduced myself, and my position with unwanted puppies, and any domestic animals.

Well, I don't want to breed her with a lab if possible, I'd rather have a Golden. I don't want to breed her just because she is huge. We have always had 3 dogs, recently My female died after a 12 year battle with Diabetes. Last year my male died at age 17, of old age. Both of those dogs were rescues. At various times, we had 5 dogs, because I fostered, but only until owners could be obtained. We also had a cat who lived to be 22 years old(he had treatable medical issues for his final 4 years, but at 22, he had started to go blind, and kidney issues, and we had him put to sleep). With my diabetic dog, we also spent great time and expense keeping her happy and healthy. I also took the time to educate myself on dogs, and cats. My vet suggested I might be a good candidate for fostering. My first name is RondaLee, I made my name into a website:

r-rights o-of n-neglected d-domestic a-animals l-live E-ethically, E- Equally. Visit me at Rondalee.com (Rights of Neglected Domestic Animals, Live Equally, Ethically)

Let me also explain why I feel some females need to be Moms. I had fostered a spayed female for 2 years (believe it or not her original owner who had been here on vacation, were reunited after 2 years!), who twice, thought she was pregnant. My neighbors dog, a mother of 7 puppies, Great Danes, died soon after giving birth. Lacey (my neighbor) and I talked, and we'd heard about female dogs actually producing milk, when being around newborn pups. Being my dog suffered false pregnancies, We gave it a shot; and to our pleasant surprise, my dog Twinkie, did indeed produce milk, and cared for these puppies. You should have seen the looks on the faces of those who adopted the pups, when my they saw my 55 lb dog with these huge puppies!

If I breed my dog, I will personally be keeping 2 of them, and already have 3 friends on board to adopt another 4. So 6 of the puppies, will already have homes. All 6 of these will be spayed or neutered right away. I am locally involved in animal rights, and know for sure I will find proper homes. I am even willing to refund $100.00 of the price I charge, to owners who can show me they had the puppy fixed in a reasonable amount of time. The 4 reserved for friends, I am giving to them for free.

I hope this clears up any fears you all have about me breeding my dog Savannah. I wish I'd of shared all of this sooner.

Thanks for hearing me out!

RondaLee

My Golden Ret. is huge!

We bought an AKC golden, even met the parents, my puppy was supposedly the runt. She was normal size at 10 weeks, but by 5 months, my Vet was sure she'd be 100 pounds.

Is anyone aware of any problems in health, or otherwise when they grow so much bigger than usual? I am a believer that female dogs should have one litter, so I intend to breed her this summer. One litter, than we'll get her spayed. She is 2 and a half now, my Vet feels her hips, and eyes, are perfect (he was concerned being so big, she'd have eyelash problems?) I am not out to make a buck, just let my dog be a Mom. Can anyone help me with what I look for in the Father dog? We just want happy family pets, and plan to sell them affordable to the average family.

I am not a dog breeder, but have raised 3 litters in the last 15 years. In the past, the Daddy dog lived on our lane. This is the 1st time, I have actually planned a litter.

Should I care about the size of the male? I have even considered breeding her with an AKC Chocolate Lab, just because I know he is has loving as she is.

Any thoughts, or advice is welcome

RondaLee Pardee

Female Pregnant on first heat

I was just wondering what happenes when a female gets pregnant on her first does it make not very heathly pups or is it more that it is draining on the mom. CKCS

Hi all,
I am new here. I am 31 and all my kids are in school now and I am a stay at home Mom and would love to have more children but I can't. I love animals and have been thinking about breeding for the last few years. I have decided on a breed that sounds like the perfect match for me and my life style. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I have read lots of books on breeding and information on the internet. I am wanting to get my first breeding pair in the summer/fall of this year. Then about the same time next year I am wanting to add another female. I do not think I want to get any bigger than that. I really want to be more of a hobby breeder than a business breeder. I have heard/read a lot about starting with a mentor. If this necessary? If so how do you go about finding one. I live in a small town in Utah so could someone just help me over the phone and internet? Any information any one has would be very helpful.
Thanks a bunch,
Anne

Looking for tips

My brother,Joe, is planning to breed pugs & toy german spitzes.Danny is planning to breed japanese spitzes.Tony is planning to breed golden retrievers.I am going to breed cavalier king charles spaniels.Do any of you breed any of these dogs?If you do or don't,can you please give us some breeding tips?

"Breeding her dog" reply

starry*boy (1/5/2008)
My 15 year old freind told me she is going to breed her 5 year old mixed breed. When she told me she was breeing him I was in total shock. She dont know that much about dogs and neither do her parents. Her mom is never home cause shes always away on these trips and her dad is a teacher and he is always busy planning for the next day. I dont know how she is even gonna have time either. Shes taking Pre Collage chourses and she just got a job she barley has time to talk to me anymore. Did I also menchion that she lives in Peru? Well she does.
Personally I dont think Its a good Idea for her to breed her dog. She is to young and she dont know anything about breeding. I really dont want something to happen to the dogs. I am her best freind and I dont wanna hurt her fellings or make her mad at me. Should I tell her it isnt a good Idea that she shouldn't breed her dog? Or should I just keep lying and telling her cool ?

HI!!! I am fiorella the "irresponsible dog owner".First of all, my dad is not a teacher, he's an architect. Second, breeding chaiko is "a possiblility., i never assured that. Third, it is true: i don't know ANYTHING about breeding, that's why i'm not going to be the one organizing it (if it takes place), but i will ask chaiko's vet (who's also chaiko's parent's vet, one of the best vets in peru, his articles are published in our most important newspaper) to supervize all the process, again, if it takes place. Fourth: i have an schedule. Chaiko is alone and inside the house (we don't have him in the attic or anything that's inhumane) for just a few hours. I go to classes from 8 am to 5 pm. He stays with mom untill 4 or 4:30 when she comes to take me from my classes. Then i come back (by 5:15) and mom leaves by 5: 30. Then i stay at home until the next day when my routine starts again. Oh ... and did i tell u that dad comes home by 9 pm? And mom has only travelled 3 times (each time for 2 days) in my life. She travelled for work, to make some conferences in a university . Meanwhile i stayed with dad. Fifth: Is living in peru bad? I've been in the US, it's cool, a great country and i liked it a lot. However, if i would have been asked to choose a nationality my answer wouldn't change: peruvian. Last year we received the visit of cameron diaz, owen wilson, woody harrelson, bill gates, etc last year. Last week we received alicia keys who spent new year in this so called "bad country" . I never say bad things about the US, i like it ...but i didnt like how carrie mentioned peru...like in a mocking way. Are best friends supposed to do that? I don't know, but none of my foreign friends discriminate me because of my nationality.
Carrie told me she didnt know anything about this post. She swore and i believed her... bad idea. Plus, she blamed someone else, someone she calls her friend. I'm leaving dogchannel, and carrie is not my friend anymore. Just wanted to warn you. I'm sorry this "fake friendship" lasted more than one year.

Breeding her dog.....

Or should I just keep lying and telling her cool ?

fixed or not fixed?

i would rather have my dog fixed, because she is a girl. if my dog were a boy, then i wouldnt mind. since she is a female, she is the one who will have the puppies, and we will have to take care of them. i love puppies, but it is up to my parents and they would say no. and also, i would be so said if some or all of them died. i would be constantly worrying and i would not be able to focus on my school work.

I'm a breeder!

Hi! Certainly not all intact b1tches develop mammary cancer. Certainly all b1tches spayed before 6 months of age are not protected from getting mammary cancer. But there is a statistically significant advantage to this procedure in b1tches which are not part of a breeding program.

The situation in dogs (male dogs), is not equivalent. It is no longer medically justifiable to castrate dogs for prevention of cancer. The overwhelming mass of data to the contrary can no longer be ignored, and publications are out there so that no veterinarian can use the excuse of ignorance. Castration predisposes to highly malignant prostatic cancer. Nearly all dogs afflicted with this nasty tumor are neutered individuals. Testicular cancers are very rare and almost always benign. Perianal adenoma can be treated by castration if and when it arises. It too is benign although messy.

I have always held that male-to-male dog-to-dog aggression is the only justification for castration. Many owners wish to castrate their male puppies thinking that all sorts of behavioral problems will be solved. Such as roaming. Most of these behaviors can only be altered by husbandry and training. Others are convinced that by castrating their dog, they will be doing the right thing regarding 'population control' - the fact is, males do not have puppies, females do. Castration is the search for the "quick fix" for people who don't wish to invest the time and effort necessary to care for their dogs properly. And, it may help; if not, the obesity which develops may achieve the desired effect.

this info came from Mary C Wakeman D.V.M. for the Central Ohio Shetland Sheepdog Assosiation march 20, 2007 news letter

PMs Are Back

Just letting everyone know, the PM system has been re-enabled. No breed is in perfect shape when the breeder happens upon it, and none shall be perfect when they lave. To improve type. movement, temperament and health must be the bottom line for every committed breeder. Such accomplishment takes a long-range plan that is carefully thought through. It requires dedication and purpose. All too often, we are sidetracked by our desires to breed to the latest big winner, and then to the next and the next. Weeks? Months?

The reason I ask:
I bought Jasmine from what seems to be a reputable breeder (titled dogs, health clearances, well known and active in the "chessie world"). She was sold to me as show quality, as I was playing around with the notion of competing with her. Well, though she is beautiful to look at, she has the most messed up bite I've ever seen. Her tongue sticks out through her bottom and top teeth. She also has an extra tooth which grows behind her row of top teeth. I smile when I picture a judge pulling back her lips to see her sticking her tongue out at him.
So...could the breeder have known that she had a bad bite when she was sold to me at 7 weeks (too early to pick up pup, I know now...would do it differently next time)?

Whatever Woofs Facts and News NEWS FLASH

On WHATEVER WOOFS FACTS AND NEWS there is a new cool thing.
