I have recently started to study hybrids and breeds that are three or more in the types of breeds that are mixed together and have found that even after three to five years of age, the dogs have had very few or no medical problems at all. If this can be the case with 60 to 80 percent of all dogs, why not go with making of mixed breeds rather than pure bred?

Reputable Exhibition Shih Tzu Breeders in Seattle Area?

I've been showing in the 4H dog project for 5 years and keeping shih tzu just as long, and now I think it's about time to begin my search for a show quality puppy.

Does anyone have the links for reputable shih tzu breeders in the Western Washington/Seattle area? They are nearing the eight week mark and I need new pictures... The puppies are developing wonderful and all are nice and fat. One of the males just loves to play tug of war... when I have them outside I can't walk without him hanging on to my foot.

This litter has turned out really nice as I believe both males at this point are show quality. Needless to say we are going to repeat this breeding... These pictures are from birth to six weeks.... I had a few in between, but I'd be taking up to much room to share them all. I've always been fascinated with sheltie growth pictures.

              Just born...

                           Five days old....

Seventeen days old...

Six weeks...

Calling Responsible Breeders

Hi! Shady scenerio?

I don't know much about how AKC registration and selling puppies works, so I have decided to try get some input from other people about a situation that I am in.

I have been looking to buy a puppy recently, and have fallin in love with the Australian Shepherd breed. I looked online and through classifieds, and I came across an add that said there were 2 puppies left out of a litter and they are selling for $100 without registration papers, but $400 with the papers. The pups are 9 weeks old. I have seen pictures of the supposed pups and the rest of the litter. The mother and father are pictured on the website as well. The rest of the pups in the litter were apparently sold with papers at the higher value.
Now like I said, I don't know anything about breeding or registering puppies; I am just trying to understand if this is possible. I didn't know the breeder had a choice to register some of the pups and not the others. The breeder also informed me that the puppy will be UTD on shots as well as come with a health guarantee allowing me to take the puppy to my vet within 48 hours and have her checked out. If it is a life or death situation, then I will be able to either exchange the pup or get my money back. I don't see how the breeder can profit from $100 if they have gotten the puppy wormed, UTD, and also the tail was cut off by her vet as well. I would be going pick up the pup instead of having it mailed, so I am not worried about that scam. I could very well be wondering these questions for nothing because, like I said, I don't know anything about breeding. I just wanted to get some advice from other breeders or people who were maybe in this situation.

help,my female tied up with neutered dog

i have a 10 month old female brittany and she tied up with a cur that was nuetered 6 days ago. what are the chances she got pregnant?

Brittany Stud

Okay, I have a male brittany pup, pics can be found in the puppy forum under new puppy pics, and I am thinking about studding him out when he's older. He's already AKC registered and there aren't many people in Iowa or Missouri that stud out their dogs much. I know it's important to have him current on all his shots and make sure the female is too, but is there anything else I need to know? Like how much should I charge? If he's OFA certified, should I charge more? What should I make sure about the female, besides shots? Is studding him out even a good idea?

I appreciate the help, thank you.

Herniated Navel

This is more out of curiosity than anything else but my female English bulldog has a herniated navel that was repaired by her breeder. My husband and I have mulled with the idea of perhaps eventually having pups, this is a HUGE maybe type of thing as we're leaning more toward spaying, but would the previous hernia be a concern during pregnancy? I emailed her breeder about it with a no reply as of yet, my vet seemed unable to give me any real answer and I can't find much on the web (I could be searching the wrong thing I suppose). If we do decide to breed her it would only be once and then she would be spayed to live out her days carefree. She is from champion bloodlines, her grandsire Kahuna won several regional shows and a national I believe. I emailed her breeder for a show history but she's still not replied to my email at this time.

As I said it's more of a curiosity though. I have mixed feelings about breeding. It's more like a 75% toward spaying kind of deal but I just have to know so I can have all the information I can. I am aware that with breeding English Bulldogs comes great care and attention. I have done my homework in great detail about the breed.

Pregnant female picky eater

Our pregnant female doxie is just being a pill about eating. After doing research of my own using just the internet, I have not come up with a distinct recognition of the Giant version in regards to breed standard. In other words, if you look for Alaskan Malamute you will see the recomended hight, weight, coloring, bone structures, tail, body, and face characteristics that dictate a "Breedable/show worthy" specimine of this breed. But you don't find anything for the Giants. As it stands the giants that I know of, are way over the hight, weight, and girth. Of course all others traits would be a given since they are still Mals.

So, if I am interested in showing a G. Mal will they automaticly be disqualified due to their sizse? Also, does AKC recognize the Giant as a seperate from reg. Mals.

My dog Sasha is a Giant Alaskan Mal (not breedable/show quality) she has hip displaisia and her tail doesn't curl enough. She was bought from the kennel because no one else wanted her. So i paid significantly less for her and took her in. She is wonderful and sweet. But I am interested in buying a "breed" qulaity from the same kennel but only if they are a recognized version of the Mal breed. Her dogs are way, way larger and all have an extremely docile nature. From what I see so far they also respond extremely well to training and obedience and still hold that intelegence owners love of Mals.

Well, I digress, anyone have any knowlege on Giant Mals vs. Mals.?

Tanya

German Dachshunds...

Hi guys! I am brand new to this forum, and have read back through some of the previous posts under this section. I have seen a lot of helpful responses to peoples' questions. I have also seen a fair bit of snitting about what someone may or may not have been inferring or what their tone may have been, etc. Despite all that, I am bringing you my questions, and hopefully I can get the helpful people who will respond. So here's the situation:

My female Bichon, Mia, had not gone into heat last April, and again did not in October. I was under the (now obviously mistaken) assumption that dogs went through some type of menopause like we do.

My mother-in-law (who we live with) brought home a male Chihuahua puppy over the summer. The breeder she bought him from told her to get him fixed BEFORE he began lifting his leg, which she did not, because to her, doing it BEFORE this marker, means wait until he's started doing it, THEN get him fixed.

SO, Mia went into heat the very end of November, and as much as I tried to keep them apart, with a 79 year old woman, 14 & 15 year old girls, and a 10 year old boy in the house, I couldn't keep them apart well enough. They ended up tying a least a couple of times.

Mia has had litters previously, a few when she was younger. Over this past couple of months, she has displayed the same behaviours that she did when she got pregnant before.

Using December 5 (one of the days I know for sure they tied), her expected whelping date would be today. I have not been able to feel any movement. However, I CAN express milk. Also, her temp has dropped about 1 degree from what it was last night (100.4 down to 99.5). I know that if their are puppies, she could be carrying them up high enough that I can't feel them.

What I'm wondering is . . . in a pseudo-pregnancy, can a female dog produce sufficient prolactin to cause lactation? Since I'm not sure, I don't know how much stock to put in the fact that I can express milk, in determining if I should keep watching for signs of labor!!

If anyone knows the answer to this, please let me know. Or if you have any other helpful thoughts on whether or not she IS pregnant.

(P.S. - The chi is, of course, now lifting his leg on everything possible and even wants to go outside, even though it's below freezing, and he didn't want to go out when it was 65!!! A housebroken dog would be nice if animal is older but not required. Questions.

First off I want to start by saying I know just how opinionated dog people can be about this type of thing... so, please read every word carefully before jumping to conclusions... I just need help, and you won't help me by yelling at me...

My parents bred their shih tzu (9lbs) to their yorkie (4lbs). She was bred about five times over the period of a week. If she got pregnant on the very first breeding, she would be 54 days pregnant right now.

I'm not sure, as I have not observed this before, but she seemed to have lost/been losing her mucous plug last night? It was a slightly cream colored, sometimes greenish (maybe the tiniest streak of blood, but not sure) slime from her vulva. I noticed it when I gave her a bath last night, because it had pasted the hairs there up around the vulva and I had to clean it pretty good. (sorry, gross, I know).

I heard that once they lose their mucous plug that you should see puppies within 48-72 hours- is this a bit early? I thought she had at least a week, or a week and a half left. I've also heard that it's not uncommon for very small dogs to give birth a week early.

Is what I am seeing normal? I started taking her temperature last night... it read normal at 101.1 F... I'll be doing it twice a day at the same time.... I'm waiting for it to drop to 99 or 98, right?

I'm just slightly concerned, because I remember, when my parents dogs had a litter before, I remember the puppies wriggled around ALOT inside the stomach, and then everything kinda hardened up 24 hours before the female went into whelp. The current litter hasn't really moved around... I mean, not in the visiable sense -the other litter I could litterally see, this one, I have to feel for. Maybe it's just because their smaller? The other litter was a 10lb shih tzu to a 13 lb shih tzu.

I know this is long, but I hope anyone who replies really takes the time to read it. Thank you so much for any helpful advice you might have. Please don't hound me with trying to get me to spay and nueter the dogs -I've tried to make it happen, my parents won't have it.

Maltese breeders CLICK HERE!

Hello everyone!

I just got a maltese puppy who I named My Queen of Sonshine, (snowball for short) and I was wondering if any one had any contact with her parents?

Her dam according to her papers name was Sonshine

And her Sire King Tuffy.

I would just like to know how they are if you have them or know who does and what there temparment is like where they are etc. I know this is kind of an odd request I was just wondering.

Her pedigree does go back farther, if you need more information just ask.

Thanks =)

(if my grammer is wierd or sentece structure tottaly off, I wrote this at 3:30 am.

Breeding my chihuahua

My chihuahua is in her second heat and i want to breed her. My chihuahua stopped her bleeding yesterday morning. My male has been licking and trying to mount her all day yesterday and today. They sleep in a 36in by 24 in pen by my bed. Not sure if they tied up during night as I sleep heavy and my hubby said he heard them making "noise". They are about the same height eventhough he is smaller in weight and length. When I have tried to hold her back end for him, he just looks at me like I am crazy and goes about other things. So,...what do you think, just leave them alone and let nature take its course? Or continue to try to help him mount.

Breeding Bichon Frise Questions

I have a four year old female Bichon Frise (Pearl) and she is really small for a Bichon, only 7 lbs (she's a full grown 3-4 year old) and the breed standard says about 18 lbs. We know several people we know who have male Bichons, but they are all larger than she is. Would breeding her to these larger Bichons cause complications because she is so much smaller? And are there extra risks because she is so small? I know Bichons usually don't have many puppies per litter to begin with, but would she only have 1 puppy because of her size, and would she need a C-section? Not planning on selling the pup/puppies, and just keeping them. But i was also a little conserned because she frets, and how she would react with and be a good mother to the pups.

The Value of a Puppy

I've been reading our local classifieds- the pet section which I always scan for no good reason. It always makes me crazy.

When I purchased my last 3 Alaskan Malamutes, I recieved AKC papers, microchip, OFA and CERF copies on the parents ,(even grandparents on one); a five generation pedigree full of Conformation Champions and various obedience, agility, weightpull and sledding titles; a health guarantee/ contract and the knowledge that my dog was produced with forethought by a breeder that likely did not make a profit. (#1 was purchased in 1996 for $400, #2 was purchased in 2004 for $800, #3 was purchased in 2007 for $1000). I'm not buying a puppy, I am reimbursing a breeder for their investment into this litter and their planning for the next.

My local paper today:

Goldendoodle- $1600

AKC "Giant" Alaskan Malamutes- $900

Purebred, unregistered Labrador- $400

AKC Cocker Spaniel- $300

Border Collie/ Heeler mix puppies- free

Any dog or puppy (designer dog, mixed breed, purebred etc) from our local shelter- $50

The average adoption fee from breed rescue $250

I KNOW breed rescues see no profit- they invest so much more into saving the unwanted, medical expenses and all. Our local shelter spends more than that just on housing, let alone altering, vaccinations or medical expenses and they charge even less.

If there was no money to be made, fewer people would breed indiscriminately...

What do you think drives the pricing? What do people really think they're paying for? What IS the value of a puppy?

Ideas to change that?

How to become a breeder

I am Brittany and I want become a breeder when I grow up as a hobbie.
