I read that she can get pregnant after she stopped bleeding. She stopped bledding sometime this week and yesterday a unnuetered dog got into my yard. I know his owners and they said they don't believe in nuetering? Anyway is there any signs of pregnancy that I can look for? She's going to the vet next week for a checkup, but I was just wondering if there ate any early signs to look for. After doing research of my own using just the internet, I have not come up with a distinct recognition of the Giant version in regards to breed standard. In other words, if you look for Alaskan Malamute you will see the recomended hight, weight, coloring, bone structures, tail, body, and face characteristics that dictate a "Breedable/show worthy" specimine of this breed. But you don't find anything for the Giants. As it stands the giants that I know of, are way over the hight, weight, and girth. Of course all others traits would be a given since they are still Mals.

So, if I am interested in showing a G. Mal will they automaticly be disqualified due to their sizse? Also, does AKC recognize the Giant as a seperate from reg. Mals.

My dog Sasha is a Giant Alaskan Mal (not breedable/show quality) she has hip displaisia and her tail doesn't curl enough. She was bought from the kennel because no one else wanted her. So i paid significantly less for her and took her in. She is wonderful and sweet. But I am interested in buying a "breed" qulaity from the same kennel but only if they are a recognized version of the Mal breed. Her dogs are way, way larger and all have an extremely docile nature. From what I see so far they also respond extremely well to training and obedience and still hold that intelegence owners love of Mals.

Well, I digress, anyone have any knowlege on Giant Mals vs. Mals.?

Tanya

On-line puppy purchases pros and cons

Hi, newbie here,

I recently submitted my first thread under "In memory of our Dogs".

While the family is going thru the tough grieving process, we sometimes look thru the various on-line sites to see what's out there in terms of breed type and prices.

When the time comes and we're ready to accept a new dog, what are some of the things that we should look for and avoid if it's decided that the dog wanted is found on-line.

Of course, our first choice would be thru the shelters, then the rescue groups and any local breeders, if possible.

So back to the internet thought, we know to check the reviews from others, how long they've on that particular website, how long they've been in business, what else should we add to our checklist?

It seems that in many cases, the majority of breeders are located several states away (we live in CA). Maybe we might make a mini vacation to visit the "right dog", but would hate to find out it's not the one. Hopefully, if it's the right dog then we can simply bring the new dog back with us.

what is standard breeder policy for hip dysplasia?

my sister bought my mother a goldendoodle from a kennel. i looked it up, the kennel is CKC registered (for golden retrievers). mom said they had no trouble with them popping in unexpectedly and were not at all reticent about showing off the property - the only offlimits area was the private residences (bedrooms, basically). they provided the contact info for their vet, the same one that examined the pups and gave them their shots.

mom got looseyfur at 8wks. at six months, mom's vet gave the dog an exam and said her hips were fine.

she was spayed at 9 months.

while i was down south, i noticed a few things that sent up red flags:

- she was ***incredibly*** out of condition. a 5mi walk would normally take dandy and i less than 2h. with lucy along, it took us over 3h - every 15min or so, we had to stop so lucy could lie down.

- dandy and the chihuahua mix had no trouble jumping up onto park benches, retaining walls, and raised planters (the masonry kind - brick, stone, yadda, you see on street corners), walking along, and jumping off. loosey would hesitate, make a couple false starts, then jump up. couple times, her back leg would fall off unexpectedly because of the exaggerated "piggie wiggle" way she walked. when she jumped off the other end, her hind end collapsed under her.

- at her home, the one she'd lived in her whole life, she was unable to keep her footing on the hardwood floors. her back feet were constantly scrabbling for traction.

- she was NOT the happy-go-lucky pup i remember from last year when i had her for a week - she snapped quickly at kittens, cats, and children. she was not tolerant of dandy and really went after him a few times.

i basically strong-armed mom into getting her checked and lo and behold: she has *severe* hip dysplasia. her hips are subluxating - surgery is the only thing that will help. even i could see on the x-rays that her hip joint looked more like a spoon on a saucer than a ball in a socket.

i checked mom's contract and basically, if mom puts loosey down, she gets a free pup. if she doesn't, she'll get a $250 discount on her next pup. my sister said it was "standard". is this really SOP - seems to me the breeder actually comes out ahead.

My dog is pregnant, what should I feed her?

I have no expierence in feeding a gregnant dog, what should I feed her?anything special than normal?

thx

my BIL wants dandy to stand stud

first off, my BIL is an idiot. by that, i mean he came up with his buddy to spend a weekend replacing the roof on my porch that was crushed by the snowload (it was going anyway - i was hoping it'd last one more winter but alas). they sat around all day saturday drinking polish beer and talking in russian (from the four words i know, i gather they were asking each other if it looked like rain; agreeing that yes, it did; and did you want another beer?). i can't *entirely* blame them - my house is in the middle of the bush, surrounded by acres of natural forest, with a river flowing across the back - you can't help but feel like lazing back with a nice cold beer.
on the sunday, he asked if he could take dandy for a walk. i said sure, no problem - just do NOT take him off the leash because there's place you can do that and places you can't and he's not a really strict person so dandy wasn't exactly behaving for him.

two hours later, he came back, both of them winded and sweaty (or foamy and soaked from the river, in dandy's case), and demanded that i push back or cancel dandy's vasectomy - he wants to breed dandy with his dog, who is half border collie, half golden lab. she is highly intelligent but she's lazy - likes to loll about all day in the sun on her back. dandy is highly intelligent but super-active. they're roughly the same size.

i told him i didn't have a problem with it as long as he accounted for ALL the pups - no dumping any into animal shelters: they're adopted, kept, or put down. he said his family back in europe bred dogs for "hundreds" of years (....okay) and not worry, he knew exactly what to do.

thing is, *i* don't! is there anything i need to know beyond keeping dandy in excellent good health?

and no - i never did get the roof done. they ripped off the damaged sections and left them all over my bulb patch and flame bush but never got around to putting up the new roof.

Belle's pups!

here are a couple of pics for now I need to get individual shots later.

Need advice on buying a pup. Shady scenerio?

I don't know much about how AKC registration and selling puppies works, so I have decided to try get some input from other people about a situation that I am in.

I have been looking to buy a puppy recently, and have fallin in love with the Australian Shepherd breed. I looked online and through classifieds, and I came across an add that said there were 2 puppies left out of a litter and they are selling for $100 without registration papers, but $400 with the papers. The pups are 9 weeks old. I have seen pictures of the supposed pups and the rest of the litter. The mother and father are pictured on the website as well. The rest of the pups in the litter were apparently sold with papers at the higher value.
Now like I said, I don't know anything about breeding or registering puppies; I am just trying to understand if this is possible. I didn't know the breeder had a choice to register some of the pups and not the others. The breeder also informed me that the puppy will be UTD on shots as well as come with a health guarantee allowing me to take the puppy to my vet within 48 hours and have her checked out. If it is a life or death situation, then I will be able to either exchange the pup or get my money back. I don't see how the breeder can profit from $100 if they have gotten the puppy wormed, UTD, and also the tail was cut off by her vet as well. I would be going pick up the pup instead of having it mailed, so I am not worried about that scam. I could very well be wondering these questions for nothing because, like I said, I don't know anything about breeding. I just wanted to get some advice from other breeders or people who were maybe in this situation.

If pure breed dogs have so many medical problems, why do people keep breeding them?

I have worked with dogs for many years and I am just discusted at how many pure bred dogs have so many medical issues but breeders keep breeding them, why? it is cruel in my book to breed animals that have hip problems, eye disorders, ear, joints, cancer and so many more just because they do not have the genetic diversity they should have. I have recently started to study hybrids and breeds that are three or more in the types of breeds that are mixed together and have found that even after three to five years of age, the dogs have had very few or no medical problems at all. If this can be the case with 60 to 80 percent of all dogs, why not go with making of mixed breeds rather than pure bred?

i want to breed my cavalier with a bichon!

hello,my name is jenny! im interested in breeding my cavalier with a bichon! me and my family are just considering it nothing is finale yet! my cavalier is 8months she just came into heat! i know that your not suppose to get them pregnant on the first heat so i am gonna wait for another heat! she will be a year old July 9th! i wanted to also know how long till her next heat? my cavalier her name is (jazzy) she is so loving and has such a great temperament! i now people are probable thinking there just gonna be mutts but actually there hybrids there called cavachons and we just want one litter cuz the second litter is just gonna be mutts cuz they don't come out as pretty!
i hope u guess look at this post with a open mind! im just wondering if anyone out there is interested? or what u guess think about this. please no harsh comments. thanks for reading

when is a dog ready for exceptance?

when after there cycle are they ready for a male?

thanks

5 month old pregnant shih tzu

I just received what I was told is a pregnant 5 month old. A classmate of mine has a mini doxie on campus and she took it home for break and she it play with her families other doxies unsupervised and the little female is not fixed. The other two were males. She believes that her doxie may have gotten pregnant. She asked me if I knew what signs to expect. Problem is I have never been around a pregnant dog and I have never seen puppies born.

So I was wondering if any one could tell me what to tell her to look for and to expect?

Also she was talking to me today and somewhat asked if the female could have the puppies at my house. And as I have said I've never seen puppies being born. or whelped. So could I get some tips on that too? Just incase.

Thanks,

Eleanor Rigby

Tibetian Mastiffs...

Heya! I have a friend who breeds Dachshunds and I want to surprise her with a German Import on her birthday. They have been wanting to add another Doxie to their family and breeding program, but I have been having a HARD time finding any!!! I found one breeder, but I would like to have a couple more to choose from...I keep reading that the Dachshund breed is dying out in Germany, so I understand why I am having a hard time finding some breeders, but anyways if you guys know a minature dachshund breeder in Germany then let me know! No wire-haireds though, her husband doesn't like them as he think they look like Shnauzers, but I ADORE the wire-haireds, and I have to completely disagree, but since it is there dog, I'll have to say no to wire-haired doxies. Thanks for your help!

The Value of a Puppy

I've been reading our local classifieds- the pet section which I always scan for no good reason. It always makes me crazy.

When I purchased my last 3 Alaskan Malamutes, I recieved AKC papers, microchip, OFA and CERF copies on the parents ,(even grandparents on one); a five generation pedigree full of Conformation Champions and various obedience, agility, weightpull and sledding titles; a health guarantee/ contract and the knowledge that my dog was produced with forethought by a breeder that likely did not make a profit. (#1 was purchased in 1996 for $400, #2 was purchased in 2004 for $800, #3 was purchased in 2007 for $1000). I'm not buying a puppy, I am reimbursing a breeder for their investment into this litter and their planning for the next.

My local paper today:

Goldendoodle- $1600

AKC "Giant" Alaskan Malamutes- $900

Purebred, unregistered Labrador- $400

AKC Cocker Spaniel- $300

Border Collie/ Heeler mix puppies- free

Any dog or puppy (designer dog, mixed breed, purebred etc) from our local shelter- $50

The average adoption fee from breed rescue $250

I KNOW breed rescues see no profit- they invest so much more into saving the unwanted, medical expenses and all. Our local shelter spends more than that just on housing, let alone altering, vaccinations or medical expenses and they charge even less.

If there was no money to be made, fewer people would breed indiscriminately...

What do you think drives the pricing? What do people really think they're paying for? What IS the value of a puppy?

Ideas to change that?

Any norwegain buhund breeders in WA?

i am Seriously thinking about getting a buhund. i have reserched them and we are a great match.

any havanse breeders in NY

just wanting to know

Reputable Exhibition Shih Tzu Breeders in Seattle Area?

I've been showing in the 4H dog project for 5 years and keeping shih tzu just as long, and now I think it's about time to begin my search for a show quality puppy.

Does anyone have the links for reputable shih tzu breeders in the Western Washington/Seattle area? They are nearing the eight week mark and I need new pictures... The puppies are developing wonderful and all are nice and fat. One of the males just loves to play tug of war... when I have them outside I can't walk without him hanging on to my foot.

This litter has turned out really nice as I believe both males at this point are show quality. Needless to say we are going to repeat this breeding... These pictures are from birth to six weeks.... I had a few in between, but I'd be taking up to much room to share them all. I've always been fascinated with sheltie growth pictures.

              Just born...

                           Five days old....

Seventeen days old...

Six weeks...

Calling Responsible Breeders

Hi! He's already AKC registered and there aren't many people in Iowa or Missouri that stud out their dogs much. I know it's important to have him current on all his shots and make sure the female is too, but is there anything else I need to know? Like how much should I charge? If he's OFA certified, should I charge more? What should I make sure about the female, besides shots? Is studding him out even a good idea?

I appreciate the help, thank you.

Herniated Navel

This is more out of curiosity than anything else but my female English bulldog has a herniated navel that was repaired by her breeder. My husband and I have mulled with the idea of perhaps eventually having pups, this is a HUGE maybe type of thing as we're leaning more toward spaying, but would the previous hernia be a concern during pregnancy? I emailed her breeder about it with a no reply as of yet, my vet seemed unable to give me any real answer and I can't find much on the web (I could be searching the wrong thing I suppose). If we do decide to breed her it would only be once and then she would be spayed to live out her days carefree. She is from champion bloodlines, her grandsire Kahuna won several regional shows and a national I believe. I emailed her breeder for a show history but she's still not replied to my email at this time.

As I said it's more of a curiosity though. I have mixed feelings about breeding. It's more like a 75% toward spaying kind of deal but I just have to know so I can have all the information I can. I am aware that with breeding English Bulldogs comes great care and attention. I have done my homework in great detail about the breed.
