I don't know what I am going to do with that woman...never put two dog enthusiasts together and have them pick a breed. lol. (They'll never decide)

I'm wondering what it is like to own a Dachshund? Are they cuddle bugs? Are they barkers? Do they have clear nails or all of them black? What are the risks? I mean with their backs? Are they stubborn with Obedience training? I know they are stubborn with potty training. Thats about all I remember from looking them up previously.

We're looking at Smooth Mini's. (well she is...I'm the one who is leary she wants one so bad...and I am one not to say no...to her any way. But I want to know what I'm getting into if this is the breed we go with.)

Are they good dogs for obedience and Rally? Go to ground? I want a dog I can do something with besided show in Confirmation and this breed to me doesn't seem to applicable to much. But I don't know much about them so I am asking to learn more. I just know that EVERYONE has them and loves them and once you have one...well I hear they are like potato chips. Last year here at Stephens college there were about six of them. But I had very little interaction with them.

Please help!

Eleanor Rigby

good condo dog for me?

[font=Comic Sans MS]ok so i live in a condo and want a dog. i have a cat to, and have a hamster. There is a park nearby for offleash dogs, and i basically want a medium size dog that will be ok in a smaller space, ideally only needs around 30 min of exercise. My partner and I have decided that this is a breed that would be suitable for us. (Living with three female Jack and Parson Russells, I think we can handle ANYTHING)

We originally made the descion because of a combination. We sort of did it with making lists of things we want in a dog. I first of all want a herding dog...growing up with three male shelties will do that. She wants a german shepard. But I also want a long haired dog. She wants a shorter coated dog (and a female). At one point I didn't think we would ever agree. But then looking through our LARGE stack of dog books. I came to the conclusion of the Belgian Tervuren and pointed it out. It seems perfect. Elegance and brains wrapped in one.

It just dawned on me you may want to know what the dog choice is for. My partner and I hope to show in confirmation...we would be doing it now but our dogs although they truly are beauty's are not AKC. (we're working on ILP) We also hope to breed and raise a few litters. I want to compete in things like Rally, obedience, Agility, someday Schutzend, possibly herding trials, and possibly once my Parson is ILP go to ground.

I'm here to see what kind of information I can find out about living with this specific breed. There is only so much one can get from books. The best answer I can give myself is to find some one with some and interact but I don't know anyone here (where I live) with Belgians. So I am taking my search to the internet and to see what I can learn from other owners!

Thanks,

Eleanor Rigby

Trying to find the right breed

I know somebody who is trying to find the right breed for them. I have read through much of the forum, and everyone here seems so willing to help us newbies find the perfect breed. PLEASE forgive the length of my post, but I wanted to get all the info out there. Here’s a little info on my situation.

Housing
I currently live in an 800 square foot apartment (1 BR) in Washington, DC. Summers in DC are HOT HOT HOT, while the winters are bitterly cold. I also live with my girlfriend, who’s family has a pug back at home. Our building allows dogs up to 100 pounds, although I think that would be a bit large for our apartment. We live on the first floor, so stairs aren’t a worry for a dog with shorter legs. We don’t have kids, neither of us has or wants a cat, and neither of us is allergic to dogs.

Dog Experience
Although I am only 24, I have spent my whole life around dogs. My family has had everything from Labs and Samoyeds to Akitas and Huskies, and we currently have a lab mix and a Scottish terrier back in Colorado. I have spent months as a professional dog walker (as an in-between job), and am comfortable working with all of the breeds and sizes I have encountered. While I have helped train all of my family’s dogs, this will be the first dog that I’ll train entirely on my own. I am currently reading “The Power of Positive Dog Training” by Pat Miller just to develop one cohesive overall strategy.

Exercise
My girlfriend runs often, but not always. Generally it’s about 3 miles, and happens about 3 times a week. She’s hoping that having a running partner will bump that up to 4 or 5 times a week. We are both active people, who enjoy hiking and skiing, but find ourselves relaxing on the couch many nights during the week. We’d want a dog who is happy just hanging out, but can pick up and run 3 miles or play fetch in the park (if it’s a breed that can be off leash in a city)

Availability
She leaves for work around 5:30am and returns around 3:00pm. I generally work nights (4 – 12pm) but sometimes work mornings (8am-4). One of us is generally at home, but I have an ex co-worker lined up to walk the dog on the days where we’d both be away for extended periods.

Preferences
A dog between 30 and 80 pounds would be perfect. I prefer larger dogs, she prefers small/medium.
Mild shedding is ok, massive shedding is not (unless it’s when a new coat is coming in and only lasts for about a week or so).
Willing to brush twice a week, and bathe 3 or 4 times a year.
The dog would be crated in the living room once comfortable with his “den”
No preference between male or female.

We’ll most likely be getting one from a shelter, so the more breed options that you can suggest for us the better, as we don’t know what’s out there. A breeder is another possibility, but it’s more of a back-up. We’re just looking for the perfect dog!!!

Thanks for any and all help!

Any mutt-lovers?

No offence to all pure bred peoples out there, but I seriously preferr mutts! Purebred dogs can get into the hands of shameless breeders, inbred, overbred, etc. Of course there are tons of good reasons but if there were no purereds there would be probably no careless breeders. The Cocker Spaniel and the lab are becoming biters, they are becoming overbred, to many bred carelessly which makes more tempermental dogs.

Also I hate breeding for conformation in general! Basset hounds- used to be tall and skinny, but now they are short and and hardly bear weight on those stumpy legs. Is slightly better smelling worth being 12 inches tall? The weiner dogs... Can't spell their names so I'll call them that.- they can be injured easily. Why does their spine have to be stretched out? They would survive being NORMAL! Bulldogs- Their noses are too short, and often they live through life trying desperatly to breathe. Also their heads are too big so they need c-section to give birth most times. German Shepherds- They are BRED so that their hips are big and wide. This makes them cooler, I guess, and also makes them good candiates for hip dysplasia. Dalmations- 30 or 40 % are born deaf. Chihuahuas_ bred to be tiiny so that they can fit in a purse or something and dressed up. Not only are their size totally unfit for their temperments, and their size makes people spoil them until they are aggressive, but many chihuahuas are very fragile. One was killed when it's owner stroked it's head, and one hit it's head against a tissue box... And died. WHAT THE HECK!?!? These dogs shouldn't have to be so fragile, maybe the big 10 pound ones are okay but why do peoplebreed them until they are 3 pounds and about as powerful as china. It's not fair to the dogs. Great danes, Saint bernards, mastiffs, wolfhounds, etc.- Do these dogs really need to be this big? They barely have a chance to live before their legs and hearts give out from supporting so much weight.

There are plenty of others, many of whom are bred to look cute or fit in puses or have a certain swagger (gait whatever) but I have named the ones that bug me the most. Is there anyone else out there against breeding?

Please do not hate me for stating my opinion. This is what I believe, and I know there are responsible breeders out there but even still toe problems exist. A dog should be what a "Dog" is, 45-60 lbs, no giant head, no shortmuzzles, no too-wide hips, no pretty spots (unless they occur naturally) dogs shouldn't be 2 pounds, and a dog shouldn't be 200 pounds either. A dog should be natural. Humans aren't bred to be perfect and beautiful, neither should dogs. (or cats or horses...) But if you want you could yell and scream to your hearts content, it would make my life more interesting....

Ps, NO I am not a PETA fan.

Chinapoos

I am thinking about getting a Chinapoo which is a poodle mixed with a chinese crested powderpuff. I plan to give her an hour long walk before I go to work, and another one hour long walk after I get home from work. So I figured I would ask for some advice from experienced dog owners.

First, my wife and I have two daughters (9 & 4). Both of them are timid around dogs - more so with large dogs than smaller dogs, but this may be b/c they have never been around dogs. For this reason we are looking for a dog that will be no bigger than 30 lbs, since large dogs scare them due to their sheer size.

Finally, I had dogs when I was a kid/teenager, but haven't had one in a while and my wife has always had cats. So I would say we are inexperienced when dealing with dogs. For this reason we would like our first dog to be very mellow, excellent with children, and easy to train.

We have a very large fenced in backyard and a two story home with plenty of space. We want the dog to live inside with us, but it will be taken out for walks and to play in the backyard.

So the million dollar question - what type of dog(s) would you recommend for our family or do we fall into the incompatible category?

Dogs you want, but will probably never own.

Just a topic for you to post the dog breeds you would like to own, but probably never will.
For me, would probably be the Doberman Pinscher,
Australian Shepherd, (Preferably blue merle.),
American Pit Bull Terrier,
Boxer,
Golden Retriever,
Pembroke Welsh Corgi,
Shiba Inu.

For the breeds you own now or figure you will own someday.

Siberian Husky, (Own a pure and a mix, hope to own many more.)
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever,
German Shepherd,
maybe Irish Setter. (My mom's favorite breed and might be the next dog we get, I don't know.)

There are more breeds I would like to own, but I just put the top ones.

Love Pitties?

Hi Pittie Lvrs!

I want to start a group to help people understand APBTs better, called either APBT Advocates or Pit Bull 101. We are working on re-homing him and we are planning on getting another dog right after. Heres the problems...Shelter or Breeder? What breed? We know we want a medium sized dog, and that doesnt need a lot of excersise. I go for a 2-mile walk everyday so I need a dog that would be content with that much, and can keep up. We were looking into an Irish Setter, but I dont know about the size. Plus we have two smaller dachshunds, one is very old and probably wont even live another 6months to a year. This dog will be my dog though, so I will consider me only having one dog. If the puppy, or dog, takes well to training, potty training, and is well behaved, it will most likely stay inside most of the time. Ohh, and the breed has to be easy to train. Im not very patient when it comes to dogs :/

Anyway, I would love suggestions about shelter or breeder, and suggestions on the breed that would fit my lifestyle. Btw, there is a 1 1/2 yr old baby in the house.
