Hello,
I have been endlessly researching dog breeds, cause I wanna make SURE that if I get a dog, that I get the right kind of dog for me. Also, I am looking for a dog breed that has certain specific qualities & abilities. I don't seem to be having much luck on my own, so maybe one of you nice people can help.

HERE IS A LIST OF QUALITIES I NEED IN A DOG:
*Has to be willing to protect & defend family and other small pets from harm.
*MUST be cat friendly & accepting of cats varying personality quirks.
*Must be intelligent & willing to do different jobs given to it.
*Being good with small children is not important, but being good with the elderly is.
*Should be reasonably independent, and not too needy.
*Should be more serious & less "puppy-like" when it reaches adulthood.
*Needs to be fairly easy to train, & must take orders well.
*Should be willing to help care for animals & family members with light "special" needs & handicaps. (kind of like an assistant)

THIS IS THE LIST OF UNWANTED QUALITIES:
*Too much energy, excessive playfulness, or clingyness.
*Destructive tendencies; since the dog will be with me most of the time, loneliness shouldn't be an issue.
*Being overly-friendly with strangers.
*Barking or howling much, I prefer bodyguards more than alarm systems, although "yodeling" like huskies do, is perfectly fine.
*Droolers, slobberers, or excessive lickers.
*Too high maintenance
*Bad manners & rudeness & obnoxiousness

Thank You all for any help you may be able to provide.

just wanted to point out that most of the stuff on your unwanted list is pretty much what you get with a puppy or an untrained dog! also all dogs are high maintenance, they all require food, water, vet care, exercise, training, and love

a few questions for you: have you owned a dog/puppy before? how much are you willing to exercise your dog?  how much are you willing to groom?

also since you are wanting a gaurd dog I hope you understand that all dogs need to be well socialized and if you want aprotection dog you should go to training classes for it. owning a protection dog if not trained properly is a big liability and is not for the first time dog owner. you need to be willing to put a lot of time and effort into training.

other than those points it sounds like a doberman pinscher, rottwieler, german shepherd, or american staffordshire terrier is what you are looking for.

I would have to agree, training is a big issue with a lot of your wants versus unwanted traits. Regardless, all breeds require some degree of exercise and grooming. I also see a bit of a conflict in that you want to dog to be not too friendly with strangers, but good with the elderly. I'm guessing if anything you want a dog that is more aloof with people than one that automatically approaches people, the problem you get here is that dogs that tend to be less people oriented can be harder to train.

I like the idea of a dobie, rottie, or GSD. Though they are generally stranger friendly, they can be trained to stand off and not run up to everyone. Another thought I have is a Giant Schanuzer, though they would require a bit more grooming.

Well, I am used to owning medium to large working dog breeds. I grew up with a German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, & about 8 Australian Shepherds. I also lived with an older Lhasa Apso but he was my mom's & he was blind by the time I was like 3. Out of all the dogs I've had the Husky was my favorite, when I was 3 my mom rescued her after being hit by a car & having her hip shattered, but we took car of her & it mended & she happily lived with us until I was 16. She was highly protective of us because we saved her life as a puppy. I'm not sure I'd get another Husky now though, because where I live is too hot for a snow dog. I might go with another German Shepherd & make sure that I get one that is not too moody. Another Aussie would be nice too. thanks for the help

My grandmother would be happy to hear that. She loves Schnauzers! She was the elderly person I was referring to.

& I know all dogs are high maintenance to a degree, what I meant was that I didn't want one that I had to groom like every 20 minutes like my mom's dog, or one that had ridiculously high energy & needed my undivided attention 24 hours a day like my ex's dog did.
Now SHE was a dog that did NOT have proper training!

Hehe, I love Schanuzers too. As for the grooming they do require a good brush every week and a trip to the groomer every 1-2 months, so not super high maitenance (Granted, I have poodles, so just about anything looks low-maitenance to me).
