Rodoe loves chasing water coming out of a water hose and is not scared of it but when i took him to swim at a sulfer hole he was terrified. Why? what should i do to get him to understand that its the same thing he chases out of the water hose? hes never had any bad insidences with water like drowning, so why?

Some dogs just don't like to get in the water.  Let him be.  If you really want to encourage him to swim, try playing fetch with a favorite toy and then chucking it into the water a little way.  Or lead by example.  Just don't throw him in or anything, if he doesn't want to then he doesn't want to.

I agree, definitely do not force him, that will only reinforce him being scared of water. I have a Lab who hates to swim, and I have narrowed it down to him not liking water in his ears. So he lays in little shallow "kiddy pools" so his ears don't get wet. Some dogs just don't like it, but that's what makes them all individuals, I learned to love it because it's just Him I wouldn't change it even if I could! Some things that might encourage him in the water though is finding a lake or something that has a slope, so that it starts shallow and slowly gets deeper, so he can decide how far he goes. Also, like DagonHounds said, if you go out into the water or play with toys near the edge or in the shallow water, he may become more adventurous about it.

i do agree with you about the toys and not forcing them, dagonhounds..... but she said her dog dose like water.....hes just afraid to go in rivers and stuff.  another thing..... i think he likes the hose so much is becaue its just going on top of him... and a lake or river/ pool is surrounded with water.. and he can easly get away  from the hose if he dosent want any more water but in a lake river or pool you have to swim to get to shore.. not as easy, and maby he dosent like the whole idea of water ALL around him... but just a thought..

Dogs usally can sense things humans can't so maybe he is sensing it is a dangerious place. I wouldn't force him into the water, just let your dog be.
